Jon Scheyer Just Made An Early 2028 Move Duke Fans Will Track

Duke's pursuit of top-tier talent pays off as standout recruit AJ Williams shines on the world stage for Team USA, showcasing why he's the hottest prospect for the 2028 class.

Duke’s 2028 recruiting board added a major name over the weekend, and the one drawing the loudest buzz is AJ Williams.

Jon Scheyer and his staff were active on the recruiting trail, extending offers to prospects in both the 2027 and 2028 classes. Duke already has a 2027 commitment from 4-star forward Kager Knueppel, but the 2028 group is where things are starting to get especially interesting.

Williams sits at the top of that class. The 5-star prospect is the No. 1 overall player in the 2028 class, according to the 247Sports 2028 Composite Rankings, and Duke joined a growing list of major programs to offer him over the past two and a half weeks. Kansas, North Carolina, and Alabama have also sent offers his way.

Right now, Williams is making his case on a bigger stage. He is representing Team USA at the FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup in Istanbul, where he has been playing alongside Duke incoming freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje and Duke 2027 target Beckham Black. The Americans have rolled through the event, winning their first four games by an average of 50 points.

Their latest result was a 141-85 win over Cameroon in the Round of 16, and Puerto Rico is next on Friday.

Williams has been a big part of that surge. The 6-foot-8 wing leads Team USA in scoring at 16.3 points per game and in rebounding at 8.3 boards per game, while also adding 1.3 assists a night. He has shot 46.3% from the field and 47.1% from three-point range on 17 total attempts.

Against Cameroon, he may have turned in his most complete performance yet: 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and a steal in 22 minutes.

Duke’s only other 2028 offer so far is Colton Hiller, another 5-star prospect who has already been on the Blue Devils’ radar for a while. Hiller was in attendance when Duke beat Michigan in Washington, D.C., in February.

John Blackwell Just Put Dukes Backcourt Into Focus

John Blackwells move to Duke gives Jon Scheyer another name to plug into a backcourt that still looks like it needs a perimeter threat with the ball in his hands. The Wisconsin transfer arrives with real production behind him, coming off a season in which he scored at a high level, helped on the glass and showed clear growth as a shooter, which is exactly the kind of profile that can change how a guard rotation functions.

What makes this addition more interesting is where Blackwell wants to go next. After spending more time off the ball at Wisconsin, he is expected to push for a bigger playmaking load in Durham, and that puts him in the middle of a competition Duke will have to sort out before the season settles in. Scheyer has been searching for someone who can create from the perimeter, and Blackwell now has a chance to make the case that he can be more than just another scorer. [Read more 🡒]

Duke Already Has One Huge Question At Quarterback

Dukes quarterback room has already gone through enough drama to shape the offseason, and the latest turn leaves the Blue Devils trying to settle on a new face under center. After losing Darian Mensah to the transfer portal, the program turned to San Jose State transfer Walker Eget, who arrived with an NCAA waiver for an extra year of eligibility and now looks like the leading candidate to handle the job.

Eget brings college experience, but the bigger question is how quickly that translates to ACC competition and how much stability Duke can count on behind him. South Alabama transfer Ari Patu and redshirt freshman Dan Mahan are the other names in the mix, which means the Blue Devils have depth options if needed, but also no shortage of uncertainty as they sort out the position. Maliq Brown May Have Shown What Decides His NBA Future

Maliq Browns NBA Summer League debut for the San Antonio Spurs offered the kind of early look that can matter for a second-round pick trying to carve out a lane. At the California Classic, the former Duke forward put up 10 points, three rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes, and he did it while showing a cleaner perimeter touch than he ever consistently flashed in college.

Brown went 2 of 4 from beyond the arc, a small sample but a notable one for a player whose shooting has long been the question hovering over his pro future. The Spurs drafted him with an eye on upside, and the path to sticking in the league may come down to whether this version of Brown is the real one or just a promising first step. [Read more 🡒]
