Duke head coach Jon Scheyer is already being talked about as a future NBA hire, and that alone says plenty about how he’s viewed in coaching circles. He’s the kind of name that keeps popping up whenever people start mapping out the next wave of college coaches who could make the jump.
Still, the bigger question is whether that move would even be an upgrade. For most NBA franchises, the Duke job carries more weight than the day-to-day grind of coaching a pro team.
Sure, if the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, or another heavyweight came calling, that would be a different conversation. But for plenty of other teams, it’s hard to argue that the NBA gig automatically tops being the head coach at Duke.
That’s why the Charlotte Hornets example stands out. The NBA is still the NBA, but Duke is Duke, and that matters.
Even so, one ESPN writer says Scheyer is firmly on the radar around the league and could land an NBA job down the road. The writer pointed to a report that the Mavericks pursued Scheyer before hiring May, and described both coaches as fitting the profile NBA teams want.

For now, though, the takeaway is simple: Scheyer’s name is out there, but Duke fans have every reason to feel comfortable that he’s not rushing toward the first NBA opening that appears.
