Jon Scheyer Breaks Silence On Hubert Davis Firing

Duke's Jon Scheyer shares his heartfelt understanding of the challenges faced by UNC's Hubert Davis, reflecting on the pressures of coaching at an alma mater amid his own success at Duke.

In the world of college basketball, the narrative of coaches stepping into legendary shoes is always compelling. Jon Scheyer, Duke's head coach, finds himself in a unique position, understanding all too well the journey of former North Carolina coach Hubert Davis.

Both Scheyer and Davis share a strikingly similar path. They played for their respective schools, returned as assistant coaches under legendary figures, and eventually took the reins themselves-Davis in 2021 and Scheyer in 2022.

However, the coaching landscape can be as unforgiving as it is rewarding. Davis, despite a 125-54 record over five seasons, was let go after North Carolina's second consecutive first-round NCAA Tournament exit.

Scheyer expressed empathy for Davis, acknowledging the emotional weight of coaching at one's alma mater. “I've got a lot of empathy for other coaches, for Hubert, not just the fact of him coaching at the school down the road, but the fact that he played there as well,” Scheyer shared. His words come from a place of understanding, having stepped into the shoes of Mike Krzyzewski, one of college basketball's most revered figures.

Under Scheyer's leadership, Duke has thrived, capturing three ACC titles in four seasons and securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight for the third consecutive year. With a 35-2 record, Duke is set to face UConn, aiming for a second straight Final Four appearance.

“Coaching is a big blessing, but it's also what you sign up for in this business unfortunately,” Scheyer reflected. He emphasized the fragile nature of coaching, especially during the high-stakes tournament season. “I try to just, always this time of year, appreciate being in these moments for that reason because it's fragile and delicate.”

Davis’ tenure at North Carolina was marked by significant victories over Duke, including a memorable win in Coach K’s final home game and another in the 2022 Final Four. This season, North Carolina handed Duke one of its two losses with a dramatic game-winning three-pointer by Seth Trimble.

In their head-to-head matchups, Davis held a 5-7 record against the Blue Devils, while Scheyer has gone 6-3 against Davis. As both coaches navigate their careers, the mutual respect and shared experiences underscore the intricate dance of rivalry and camaraderie in college basketball.
