Duke’s seat in the ACC conversation has cooled off in a hurry.
A week ago, the Blue Devils were sitting at 4-0 and had climbed to No. 2 in the conference power rankings. Two straight losses later, Duke is down to No. 8 after back-to-back close defeats against Georgia Tech and North Carolina. The latest setback leaves the Blue Devils trying to stop the slide fast, with hopes of getting back to the ACC Championship Game fading quickly.
The pattern in those losses has been painfully similar. Duke’s offense has managed a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to grab the lead, only for the defense to give it right back before the finish. Now the Blue Devils have dropped six spots in two weeks, and a Friday night road game at Virginia offers little room for error.
At the top, Miami stays put at No. 1 after surviving a tense night against Florida State. The Hurricanes needed overtime - and a questionable holding call - to finally put the Seminoles away at home and stay unbeaten at 6-0.
Wake Forest holds the No. 2 spot after handling a difficult stretch with authority. The Deacons posted dominant road wins at NC State and California before the bye, improving to 6-1. Their only loss came in a competitive game against Miami, and they remain positioned for a possible rematch in Charlotte.
SMU comes in at No. 3 after running its win streak to three with a 23-13 victory over the injured Virginia team. The Mustangs are 5-1 and have a manageable path ahead, with the November 14 home matchup against Wake Forest shaping up as the game that could decide who lines up next to Miami in the ACC Championship Game.
Clemson is rising with the chaos around it. The Tigers rolled past Charleston Southern 37-0 and sit at No. 4, helped by the fact that neither Wake Forest nor SMU is on their schedule. That opens the door for Clemson to make a sneaky push toward the title game.
North Carolina moves up to No. 5 after back-to-back road wins over Pitt and Duke. In Bill Belichick’s second season in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels opened fast against Duke, built a 17-0 lead, and then finished the job with a late touchdown drive.
Louisville lands at No. 6 after a 34-26 road win at Syracuse, its second straight victory since the loss to NC State. The season has been frustrating for the Cardinals, but they’re still very much alive in the ACC race.
Virginia Tech checks in at No. 7 after ending a two-game losing streak with a 34-24 home win over Georgia Tech. The schedule gets tougher from here, starting with next week’s ACC Championship elimination game at Clemson. Road trips to SMU and Miami still wait, too.
Pitt falls to No. 9, and the difference is clear without Mason Heintschel. The Panthers have dropped two straight since losing their star quarterback for the season, including a rough road loss at Boston College, a team that had spent much of the year near the bottom of the league.
Florida State sits at No. 10 after coming within reach of a signature win at Miami before falling in overtime. The Seminoles are 3-4 now, and while they’ve mostly stayed competitive aside from the blowout loss to Louisville, the record is the record.
Virginia is No. 11 after another rough week in a season that keeps getting more battered. The loss to SMU handed the Cavaliers their third defeat already, and the team that opened by dominating NC State looks nothing like that group now.
NC State moves up despite not playing, landing at No. 12 out of a bye week.
Boston College is No. 13 after picking up an important ACC win over Pittsburgh. The Eagles came from behind to get it done, and the next two weeks will tell the story with road games at Georgia Tech and Duke coming up.
California drops to No. 14 after giving back the good will from its impressive win over Virginia Tech. Wake Forest beat the Golden Bears 41-7 at home, and Cal’s uneven season took another turn with the benching of QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
Georgia Tech is No. 15 after failing to build on last week’s win over Duke and losing by 10 at Virginia Tech.
Syracuse remains at No. 16 at 2-4, still winless in ACC play.
Stanford rounds out the rankings at No. 17 after a 34-7 win over Elon snapped a stretch of consecutive blowout losses to Wake Forest and Notre Dame.

Duke Has A Few Bright Spots But Two Concerns Keep Growing
Duke came out of the loss to North Carolina with a few things it can build on, even if the result extended a rough stretch. Running back Nate Sheppard provided one of the brighter spots, and defensive player Preston Watson also turned in a noteworthy performance in a game where the Blue Devils needed more clean execution across the board.
Walker Egets uneven play remains the most obvious concern, especially with turnovers continuing to hurt Duke at key moments. And while there has been plenty of intrigue around recruit Bryce Davis, he did not make much of an impact against North Carolinas offensive line, leaving the Blue Devils with more questions than answers as the losses pile up. Dukes Passing Game Could Decide Everything Against North Carolina
Duke heads into its matchup with North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium with the kind of conference positioning that can make every play feel magnified. The two teams sit in similar spots in the ACC race, and with the Tar Heels dealing with notable injuries in the secondary, the Blue Devils have a chance to lean into the part of the offense that could stress that weakness most.
Nate Sheppard's status adds another layer to the plan, though, because his questionable availability could force Duke to adjust on the fly. If he is limited or unable to go, the Blue Devils may have to find production through other receivers and a passing script that can still take advantage of what North Carolina is missing on the back end. Duke Faces One Huge Question Before North Carolina Showdown
The buildup to Dukes matchup with North Carolina has been complicated by the injury report, and Nate Sheppard is right in the middle of it. The Duke running back is listed as a true game-time decision, leaving the Blue Devils with one more layer of uncertainty as they get ready for a rivalry game where every detail tends to matter.
Both teams are dealing with their own long list of availability questions, with several players already tagged as out or questionable. The final injury reports will not be released until two hours before kickoff, so for Duke, the clearest answer on Sheppard may not come until the last possible moment. [Read more 🡒]
