Duke heads into fall camp as the defending ACC champion, but the expectations around Manny Diaz’s team are a little quieter this time. That’s familiar territory for Diaz in his third season in Durham, and he’s chasing a record third straight nine-win year as the Blue Devils keep building on a resurgence under two different coaches.
Even if Duke doesn’t make it back to Charlotte to defend the conference crown, camp should still reveal a lot about what this team can be in 2026. A few position battles and developmental jumps stand out right away.
The biggest question sits at quarterback, where Walker Eget is stepping into a difficult assignment after Duke’s dramatic transfer portal shakeup. The Blue Devils lost Darian Mensah to Miami, which led to a lawsuit and settlement, and now the San Jose State transfer has to make a major leap from the lower Group of Five to the Power Four. How quickly he settles into Jonathan Brewer’s offense will be one of the most important things to watch.
That ties directly into the skill players around him. Camp will be about building timing and trust with tight end Jeremiah Hasley, running back Nate Sheppard, and the new pass-catchers Javen Nicholas, who came over from Charlotte, and Jared Richardson from Penn. If that chemistry comes together early, Duke’s offense has a chance to look far smoother right away despite all the changes.
On defense, one of the most intriguing names is true sophomore Wesley Williams, Duke’s highest-rated recruit in program history. He was ranked as a top-five edge rusher in the 2025 recruiting class, and this fall brings a new starting role and a much bigger spotlight.
The former 4-star recruit has the kind of upside that could change the shape of Duke’s defense. If he takes off, it would not only give the Blue Devils another playmaker up front, but also send a message that Durham is the kind of place where elite talent can keep developing. A strong camp from Williams would set the stage for a potentially huge second year.
Diaz may also be building something special with the players from his second recruiting class. Nate Sheppard already proved plenty as a former 3-star tailback, emerging as one of the ACC’s top running backs as a true freshman. Safety Andrew Pellicciotta, linebacker Bradley Gompers, and Williams all flashed during Duke’s ACC title run, and now Bariate Kara and Jaivon Solomon are expected to take on bigger roles.
That second-year group could end up shaping the season. If those players grow the way Duke needs them to, the Blue Devils have a real shot to do more than just reach a bowl game. They could be in position to push toward nine or 10 wins again.
