Duke walked out of Saturday’s home loss to North Carolina sitting at 4-2, and the frustration came from the same few places again and again: missed chances, uneven execution through the air and a couple of self-inflicted mistakes that left the Blue Devils chasing the game.
The passing attack never really settled in for long. Walker Eget had a better stretch in the second half, but for most of the afternoon the rhythm just wasn’t there. He missed on a few throws he needed to hit and survived at least two or three passes that could have easily been intercepted.
That part stung because Duke’s receivers were creating space. The openings were there.
The chances were there. But the Blue Devils didn’t finish enough of those plays, even with Nate Sheppard - who had been questionable all week and entered Saturday as a game-time decision - emerging as Duke’s most dangerous presence, especially when he was involved as a receiver.
The matchup looked ripe for more damage. North Carolina’s secondary was already dealing with injuries, and this felt like a spot where Duke could lean into the passing game and push the ball. Instead, too many of those opportunities went to waste.
And that wasn’t just true in the air. Duke had multiple chances to punch the ball into the end zone and couldn’t cash in. Those empty trips mattered.
Defensively, though, the Blue Devils did enough to give themselves a real shot. North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. had thrown two interceptions in each of the previous two games and had been sacked 11 times coming into Saturday, and Duke had the kind of front and secondary that could make life hard for him. The Blue Devils entered the game as one of the ACC’s better scoring defenses, while Carolina was near the bottom of the league in scoring offense, so this was always a game where Duke’s defense could seize control.
For much of the second half, it did. Duke forced multiple turnovers after having just two takeaways all season before the rivalry game, though the pass rush still left a few things on the table.
Even so, those turnovers kept Duke hanging around and in position to win. It wasn’t flawless, but it was a promising sign from a defense with plenty of upside.
The other issue was discipline. Penalties were a big part of Duke’s loss at Georgia Tech last weekend, and that had to be cleaned up quickly. The Blue Devils were better on that front overall, but they still had a couple of costly flags in the second half.
That’s the kind of detail that keeps biting teams. Duke can’t afford to beat itself if it wants to keep winning.

Duke Has A Few Bright Spots But Two Concerns Keep Growing
Duke came out of the loss to North Carolina with a few things it can build on, even if the result extended a rough stretch. Running back Nate Sheppard provided one of the brighter spots, and defensive player Preston Watson also turned in a noteworthy performance in a game where the Blue Devils needed more clean execution across the board.
Walker Egets uneven play remains the most obvious concern, especially with turnovers continuing to hurt Duke at key moments. And while there has been plenty of intrigue around recruit Bryce Davis, he did not make much of an impact against North Carolinas offensive line, leaving the Blue Devils with more questions than answers as the losses pile up. Dukes Passing Game Could Decide Everything Against North Carolina
Duke heads into its matchup with North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium with the kind of conference positioning that can make every play feel magnified. The two teams sit in similar spots in the ACC race, and with the Tar Heels dealing with notable injuries in the secondary, the Blue Devils have a chance to lean into the part of the offense that could stress that weakness most.
Nate Sheppard's status adds another layer to the plan, though, because his questionable availability could force Duke to adjust on the fly. If he is limited or unable to go, the Blue Devils may have to find production through other receivers and a passing script that can still take advantage of what North Carolina is missing on the back end. Duke Faces One Huge Question Before North Carolina Showdown
The buildup to Dukes matchup with North Carolina has been complicated by the injury report, and Nate Sheppard is right in the middle of it. The Duke running back is listed as a true game-time decision, leaving the Blue Devils with one more layer of uncertainty as they get ready for a rivalry game where every detail tends to matter.
Both teams are dealing with their own long list of availability questions, with several players already tagged as out or questionable. The final injury reports will not be released until two hours before kickoff, so for Duke, the clearest answer on Sheppard may not come until the last possible moment. [Read more 🡒]
