Dukes 4-0 Start Has A Few Blue Devils Turning Heads

As the Duke Blue Devils soar to the top of the ACC standings with a sweeping victory and standout performances, the spotlight shines on rising stars who are making their mark this season.

Duke heads into its bye week sitting exactly where it wants to be: unbeaten, sharp in spots, and with the kind of momentum that can make the second half of the season dangerous.

The Blue Devils cruised past William & Mary 62-7 on Saturday at home, moving to 4-0 for the second time under head coach Manny Diaz. With league play about to tighten the screws, the game also gave Duke a chance to manage some of its top pieces while giving younger players extra snaps before the schedule gets heavier.

Through four weeks, the Blue Devils have cleaned up their play in a lot of areas, and that shows up in the standings too. They’re sitting at the top of the ACC, and a few players are starting to separate themselves as the season takes shape.

One of the clearest risers has been Jonah Burton. The Idaho State transfer still hasn’t been part of a true WR1 breakout from Duke this season, but he’s been the closest thing to it.

Against the Tribe, Burton led the team in receiving for the third time in four games, finishing with five catches for 63 yards. He’s now tied for the team lead with 13 receptions and sits second on the roster with 187 receiving yards.

Duke is still going to run plenty of its offense through star running back Nate Sheppard, and the wideouts don’t need to be the centerpiece every week. What the Blue Devils do need is consistency when the ball does go their way, and Burton has given them that most often so far. There may not be a clear top target in the room, but through four games, Burton has been the most dependable name.

Another player trending up is receiver Richardson, who needed a little time to get rolling after a quiet start. He didn’t record a catch in Duke’s first two games, which stood out given the expectations that came with him arriving in Durham. Over the last two weeks, though, he’s started to find his footing.

The Penn transfer has totaled five catches for 82 yards over that stretch, and he picked up his first touchdown as a Blue Devil against William & Mary. With the resume he brought with him, there’s still plenty of reason to believe in his upside. Duke has multiple receivers who can pop in any given game, but Richardson has the talent to become a steady part of the passing game, and his role looks set to grow as the season goes on.

On the other side of the ball, sixth-year linebacker Nick Morris Jr. has been one of Duke’s early defensive standouts. After a 2025 season that ended after four games because of a leg injury, he’s come out strong in 2026. Through four games, Morris leads the team with 23 total tackles and has also logged a fumble recovery.

Duke’s defense kept building on Saturday, limiting William & Mary to 170 total yards and just 17 rushing yards. Morris added three total tackles in the win, another small but steady part of a defense that’s been trending in the right direction.

Cameron Boozer Is Already Earning The Kind Of NBA Praise Duke Expected

Cameron Boozers one-and-done season at Duke already gave the Blue Devils plenty to point to when it came to his profile as a future pro, and that conversation only got louder after the 2026 NBA Draft. Selected No. 3 overall by the Memphis Grizzlies, Boozer arrived in the league with the kind of reputation Duke fans are used to seeing attached to elite recruits who do not need long to prove they belong.

Former Virginia guard Ty Jerome added to that buzz during media day, offering a public nod to Boozers maturity and the broader package that made him such a coveted prospect. For Duke, it is another reminder that Boozers value was never just about the ranking or the hype, but about how quickly he earned trust as a leader and how smoothly he translated that into the next level. Duke Freshman Already Drawing Buzz As A Real Piece This Season

Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje arrives at Duke with a different kind of resume than most freshmen. The 17-year-old spent his early career at FC Barcelona before making the jump to Durham, and his background has already given the Blue Devils another young frontcourt piece worth watching as the season gets underway.

There is still an adjustment period ahead as he settles into college basketball, but the early buzz around Boumtje Boumtje is real enough to have his teammates talking. Sophomore Dame Sarr, another former FC Barcelona player, has been among those expressing confidence in what Boumtje Boumtje can become, and Duke will be counting on that transition to keep moving in the right direction as his role grows. Jon Scheyer Knows What This Duke Team Must Finally Prove

Jon Scheyer has spent enough time around Duke basketball to know the standard never really loosens, even after seasons that push the Blue Devils close to the top of the sport. As he looks at this years roster, the message is less about chasing the exact feel of recent teams and more about carrying forward what worked while trying to keep Duke in the hunt at the highest level.

The challenge, as Scheyer sees it, is that the Blue Devils cannot simply assume last seasons formula will show up again in the same way. The pieces that made that group so difficult to copy are not easy to replace, and the next step is making sure this roster keeps strengthening its foundation while aiming to compete deep into the season.
