Duke Suddenly Has A Finishing Problem At The Worst Time

The Duke Blue Devils look to regroup and reclaim their early-season form, aiming for success in clutch moments as they prepare to face Virginia.

Duke’s last two Saturdays have been decided in the kind of moments that sting the longest.

One week, the Blue Devils had a shot to push a road trip at Georgia Tech into overtime. The next, they were trying to claw back against North Carolina after the Tar Heels grabbed the lead with less than two minutes left. In both cases, Duke came up short, and both losses arrived with the game hanging on a single snap or kick.

The common thread is brutal in its simplicity: Duke is 4-2 after opening 4-0, and the two defeats have come by a combined seven points. Against Georgia Tech, the Blue Devils put together a 59-yard drive in about 50 seconds to set up a chance to extend the game, but freshman kicker Gavin Strange missed a 33-yard field goal in the final seconds. That turned a potential escape into a 28-25 loss.

This past weekend against the Tar Heels, Duke had controlled much of the second half after falling behind 17-0. UNC was held scoreless until Jaylen McGill scored with less than two minutes remaining, but the Blue Devils had let the game stay alive long enough for the finish to turn ugly.

North Carolina also converted a 4th-and-4 with about three and a half minutes left, a play that could have slammed the door on Duke if it had been stopped. Instead, Carolina kept the drive going and scored.

Duke’s final possession this time didn’t produce a rescue act. Walker Eget threw an interception to end it.

Afterward, Manny Diaz was asked about what it feels like to drop back-to-back games in that fashion. His answer pointed straight at the thin margin between winning and losing in college football.

"Well, there's a frustration in defeat, obviously...," Diaz said. "...

This is just what college football is going to be like week in and week out. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if we're not in this the next six weeks.

And so, it's just going to come down to who makes those plays and who can finish and...who can do simple well."

Now Duke has to try to turn the page quickly. The Blue Devils head to Charlottesville next to face Virginia, which is 4-3 and 2-2 in the ACC after a 23-13 loss at SMU. For Diaz and his team, the task is clear: stop letting tight games slip away and find a way to get back on track.

Duke Suddenly Has A Nate Sheppard Concern It Can't Ignore

Duke got a heavy dose of Nate Sheppard in the loss to North Carolina, and it came with a reminder that the Blue Devils may have more to monitor than just the final score. Even while not fully healthy, Sheppard was still a major factor, finishing with 77 rushing yards, 98 receiving yards and a touchdown as Duke slipped to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in ACC play.

The bigger concern is what that workload means going forward, especially with Virginia next on the schedule. Sheppards impact was obvious enough to draw praise from North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick, who called him the best running back in college football after the game, but Duke now has to balance how much it can lean on him against how well he can hold up. Duke Let The Victory Bell Slip Away In Brutal Fashion

Duke turned a rivalry game that looked to be slipping away into a real live-wire finish, clawing back from a 17-point hole and finally seizing the lead late against North Carolina. Nate Sheppard was at the center of it, giving the Blue Devils a lift with 77 rushing yards and 98 receiving yards, capped by a late touchdown catch that put Duke in front and sent the sideline into celebration.

The defense had enough chances to make that lead stand, but the final minutes belonged to North Carolina, which answered with the winning touchdown under two minutes remaining in a 24-20 escape. For Duke, the frustration is not just the loss itself but how close it came after such a hard-earned rally, with a chance to own the Victory Bell slipping away in the harshest possible fashion. Dukes Young Blue Devils Face A Huge Early Test Vs Tennessee

The young Blue Devils are getting a revealing early look at themselves before the games start to count, with an exhibition against Tennessee at Cameron Indoor Stadium set to be one of the biggest pieces of Dukes 2026-27 preseason. For a roster leaning on youth, the matchup offers an immediate measuring stick, and the recent scrimmage against Belmont gave an early glimpse of the freshmen and redshirt freshman who could shape the tone of the season.

Among the names worth watching are Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, Deron Rippey Jr. and Wilkins, who are all expected to have notable roles in the game and beyond. Tennessee brings the kind of top-10 challenge that can expose inexperience fast, so this meeting should tell Duke plenty about how ready those younger pieces are to handle a higher level of pressure before the schedule turns real.
