Duke’s latest trip through ACC play ended with the kind of statement win that usually gets a team moving up the board. Instead, the Blue Devils stay put.
That’s the reality of these rankings after Week 9: Duke blasted Boston College 47-2, a result that looked nothing like the close game many expected. Boston College came in riding back-to-back wins and some real momentum, but Duke ripped that away with a 45-point rout. Even so, the Blue Devils remain right where they were.
The bigger reason Duke can’t climb is the lingering weight of that Georgia Tech loss a few weeks ago. As the Yellow Jackets keep sliding in what’s been described as a stunning 2026 free fall, that result keeps looking worse for the Blue Devils.
At the top, Miami stays No. 1 at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the ACC after surviving its toughest test yet in Chapel Hill. North Carolina pushed the Hurricanes, but Miami still walked out with the road win and now turns its attention to next week’s showdown in South Bend.
Wake Forest holds the No. 2 spot at 7-1, fresh off a 51-7 demolition of Virginia. The Demon Deacons get Merrimack next before a major road matchup at SMU on 11/14.
Virginia Tech moves up to No. 3 even while idle, helped by SMU’s shocking loss. Louisville follows at No. 4 after winning three straight and flattening Stanford by four touchdowns. The Cardinals still have three of their final four games on the road, but they avoid the league’s top tier and remain very much in the Charlotte mix.
SMU drops to No. 5 after that surprising road defeat at Syracuse, which complicates the picture heading into November. Duke sits sixth, with Nate Sheppard’s record-breaking performance powering the blowout of Boston College. The Blue Devils now head into a tough closing stretch, with three of their final four games away from home, starting next week in Raleigh against a resurgent NC State.
Clemson checks in at No. 7 after bouncing back from a home loss to Virginia Tech with a 36-24 win over Florida State in Tallahassee. North Carolina lands at No. 8 after coming within three points of the biggest win of the Bill Belichick era, only to fall short at home against Miami. The Tar Heels have now dropped two straight and sit at .500 after the loss to Syracuse the week before.
Pitt is No. 9 after snapping a three-game losing streak with a 34-11 win over Georgia Tech, while Syracuse jumps to No. 10 after back-to-back wins over North Carolina and SMU brought Fran Brown’s team back to .500.
Boston College falls to No. 11 after the Duke loss, and the road ahead is unforgiving. The Eagles host Florida State this week in a must-win game for bowl eligibility, and two of their final four games come against Notre Dame and Miami.
NC State is No. 12 after a 31-10 win over California gave the Wolfpack a needed boost following the coach firing. Back-to-back home games against Duke and Syracuse will likely decide their postseason fate.
Florida State is No. 13 after a third straight loss, Stanford is No. 14 after its 28-point defeat at Louisville, and Virginia sits No. 15 in a season that has gone sideways in a hurry after last year’s ACC Championship Game run and the program’s near miss at a College Football Playoff berth.
California drops to No. 16 after losing five of its last six and three straight, with the last three all described as non-competitive. Georgia Tech remains last at No. 17 after another rough week, this time a 23-point loss to Pitt.

Duke Won Big But This Didnt Look Like A Title Threat
Duke opened its season with a lopsided win over Army, but the performance came with enough rough edges to keep the early optimism in check. The Blue Devils leaned on defense to create separation, as Armys zone slowed the offense and made the game look far less comfortable than the final margin suggested. Dame Sarr led the way with 16 points, while Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje gave Duke a useful debut with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
What stood out most was how uneven the offense looked against a team that was content to pack things in and make Duke work for every clean look. The Blue Devils struggled from three-point range, and John Blackwells quiet debut added to the sense that this was more a reminder of unfinished business than a statement win. For a roster with bigger goals, the defense was encouraging, but the attack still has to prove it can look sharper when opponents start making the game ugly. [Read more 🡒]
Manny Diaz Sees Dukes NC State Trip As Part Of A Bigger Problem
The ripple effects of N.C. States midseason coaching change reached Durham quickly, and Manny Diaz did not hide how much it bothered him. With the Wolfpack now under interim coach Todd Goebbel, Diaz framed the situation as part of a larger strain on college football, one where financial pressures keep rising and the sports competitive balance looks nothing like the NFLs more stable structure.
For Duke, the immediate task is still the same: prepare for a conference game against an opponent trying to steady itself in the middle of a turbulent season. But Diazs comments also served as a reminder that these matchups are increasingly being shaped by more than the scoreboard, with program expectations and player availability now carrying as much weight as the coaching change itself. Former Blue Devil Rodney Hood Is Back Around Duke Basketball
Rodney Hood is back around Duke basketball in a new role, with Jon Scheyer confirming during a press conference that the former Blue Devil and NBA veteran has joined the program as a coaching intern. It is another notable addition to a staff that continues to blend the programs past with its present, and it gives Hood a chance to start the next phase of his basketball career inside the same environment where he once played.
Duke is coming off a home win over Army and now turns to a stretch that includes Coastal Carolina and Michigan State, so Hoods timing puts him back in the middle of a team with immediate work ahead. For a program that has always valued connections to its former players, his return adds another familiar face to the sideline as the Blue Devils keep building toward the next challenge.
