Duke's UNC Test Just Got More Serious Than Fans Expected

As the fierce Duke-Carolina rivalry reaches new heights, both teams prepare for another gripping showdown with a history of 7-7 ties adding fuel to the competitive fire.

Duke-Carolina doesn’t need much selling this week. The series has been tight enough to speak for itself: Duke and North Carolina are dead even over the last 14 meetings at 7-7, and the recent games have had the kind of endings that stick with people. The last four have all been one-score decisions, with scores of 38-35 UNC, 47-45 UNC in overtime, 21-20 Duke and 32-25 Duke.

That kind of back-and-forth is what makes the rivalry feel alive, and it’s a long way from the stretches when one side had all the leverage. After Steve Spurrier left for Florida following the 1989 season, North Carolina won 21 of the next 22 games in the series.

Before Spurrier, Duke had already spent years trying to climb out of a hole; among Duke coaches since Bill Murray retired in 1965, Spurrier is the only one to finish his tenure with a winning record against UNC. Tom Harp, Mike McGee, Red Wilson and Steve Sloan combined to go 5-15-1 in the rivalry, and McGee’s five-year run included losses by scores of 14-13, 39-38 and 16-15, along with a 17-17 tie.

Red Wilson won once and was fired soon after.

The balance started to shift once Duke hired David Cutcliffe, though it didn’t happen overnight. That changed with Jamison Crowder’s touchdown in 2012, which helped reset the rivalry in Duke’s favor.

Since then, the teams have kept trading punches, and Manny Diaz now has a chance to add his name to a very short list. Diaz is 2-0 against North Carolina, and a win would make him only the third Duke coach - alongside Spurrier and Cutcliffe from 2016-2018 - to win three straight against the Tar Heels since Duke ran off seven straight in the 1950s.

This year’s matchup comes with both teams in a different place than many expected. North Carolina spent the offseason dealing with scandal, investigations and embarrassment, while Bill Belichick was “circling the drain.”

Even with all of that noise, the Tar Heels have shown they’re not just rolling over. After a roster overhaul and the addition of Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator, they beat TCU on a neutral field, won at Pitt and gave Clemson and Notre Dame real problems.

That doesn’t make them bulletproof. TCU may not be very good, and North Carolina did lose to Clemson and Notre Dame.

Pitt also played without starting quarterback Mason Heintschel. Still, Diaz sees a team that has found some things it can trust.

“They’re playing really, really good defense. If you’re playing good defense, you have a chance to win, week-in and week-out.

What they’ve done now, adding a Bobby Petrino to their staff, they’re schemed up offensively. They’re able to control the ball with their run game.

They’ve got outstanding tight ends and they’re utilizing their personnel well.

“Like us, they’re very comfortable winning low-scoring or one-score type games and I think they’ve done a really good job.”

For Duke, the formula is simpler to say than to execute. Diaz said his team has to lean into what it does best, win at the line of scrimmage, and avoid the easy mistakes that have cost them before. He pointed to the need to stop giving up “cheap, easy touchdowns” and to clean up the sloppy stretches that showed up last Saturday.

“We have to do what we think we do really well. We have to try to control the line of scrimmage.

That’s hard against them because their defensive line is probably the top position group they have on their football team. We’ve got to get back to not allowing cheap, easy touchdowns like we did a week ago.

And play clean in ways we didn’t play clean on Saturday.”

Dukes Passing Game Could Decide Everything Against North Carolina

Duke heads into Saturdays matchup with North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium in a spot that should feel familiar by now: close ACC records, familiar opponent, and the kind of game where one matchup can tilt the whole afternoon. The Tar Heels come in with issues in the secondary, which gives the Blue Devils a possible opening if they want to lean on the air instead of trying to pound away on the ground.

Nate Sheppards status adds another layer to the puzzle. Dukes star player is questionable because of injury, and that uncertainty could force the Blue Devils to adjust their offensive approach on the fly. With so much on the line in a rivalry game that figures to be tight, how Duke chooses to attack North Carolina through the passing game may end up shaping everything. [Read more 🡒]

Duke Faces One Huge Question Before North Carolina Showdown

Dukes buildup to Saturdays rivalry showdown with North Carolina has been complicated by the uncertainty around Nate Sheppard, who is listed as a true game-time decision because of an injury. With the final injury reports for both teams due out two hours before kickoff, the Blue Devils still have some waiting to do before they know exactly how their rotation will look in one of the biggest games on the schedule.

Sheppard is not the only name hanging in the balance, either, as both rosters feature players listed out or questionable for the matchup. For Duke, the issue is less about one individual absence than the ripple effect it can create in a game where every available piece matters, and the last bit of clarity may not come until shortly before the teams take the field. Duke Turns UNC Weekend Into A Big Recruiting Opportunity

Duke is turning an in-state showcase weekend into more than just a football date on the calendar. The Blue Devils will have several recruiting visitors on hand, including Brayden Bailey, a junior wide receiver from Holy Innocents Episcopal School who has already emerged as a top-tier 2028 prospect.

Bailey has a Duke offer in hand and has been making the rounds with other Power Four programs as well, including Wake Forest. He also brings a strong recent rsum, thanks to his sophomore production and an encouraging start to his junior season, which makes his trip to Durham one worth watching as the Blue Devils try to make an early impression.
