Duke's Nate Sheppard Carries A Bigger Concern Into Boston College

Can Duke capitalize on Boston College's defensive struggles to reignite Nate Sheppard's standout season and boost their momentum?

Duke didn’t just snap its two-game slide at Virginia last Friday night. It bought itself a little breathing room.

At 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, the Blue Devils now head back home for a Boston College team that has been playing well lately, and the next stretch lines up as a real opportunity. Duke gets the Eagles first, then travels to Raleigh to face NC State (3-4, 1-3 ACC), with No.

1 Miami waiting in Coral Gables after that. If the Blue Devils want to stack wins before that trip, these next two feel especially important.

A big reason Duke has stayed relevant this season is sophomore running back Nate Sheppard, whose production has driven the offense. He ranks sixth nationally in rushing yards with 875 and sixth in carries with 153, and he has been responsible for 13 of Duke’s 25 rushing or receiving touchdowns. That kind of workload has made him the centerpiece of the attack.

Lately, though, Sheppard hasn’t looked quite like his usual self. Two weeks ago against North Carolina, he was a game-time decision because of injury, then went on to post 77 rushing yards on 20 carries while also catching 11 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

That 77-yard rushing total was his lowest of the season. Last week at Virginia, he handled the ball 15 times on the ground, which was a season low against Power Conference competition, and finished with 55 rushing yards and a touchdown.

He added two receptions for 11 yards.

The dip doesn’t change what he means to Duke. “Don’t get me wrong, Sheppard has still been highly impactful, and I still think he has a great case as the most valuable player in college football. But relative to his standards, he's been held in check over the last two games.”

Boston College brings a defense that gives Duke a clear path to lean on the ground game. The Eagles are giving up about 151 rushing yards per game, while allowing the second-fewest passing yards in the ACC at 182.1 per game. That sets up a matchup that could tilt heavily toward rushing volume, something Manny Diaz and Co. can try to exploit.

For Duke, the formula is straightforward: keep feeding one of the best players in the country and see if he can get back to the kind of pace that has carried the Blue Devils when they’ve been at their best. This weekend gives Sheppard a chance to do exactly that.

Duke Loss Stings But Mia Minestrella Is Closing In On History

The early hole was too much for Duke to overcome in a 2-1 loss to 22nd-ranked Florida State, but Mia Minestrella still managed to give the Blue Devils a spark with her latest milestone. Florida State built a 2-0 lead before Minestrella answered in the 31st minute, trimming the margin and adding another chapter to a senior season that has kept her in the programs record conversation.

Minestrellas goal was her 46th of her career, a total that keeps her closing in on history even as Duke settles back into conference play at 9-2-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the ACC. Florida State left with a road win and improved to 8-2-3 overall and 4-1-2 in league action, but for Duke, the larger individual storyline remains Minestrellas pursuit of another landmark before the season runs out. Manny Diaz Just Put Dukes Roster Uncertainty In The Spotlight

Manny Diaz used a recent radio appearance to shine a light on a problem that has become impossible for college football programs to ignore: the uncertainty around the transfer portal and the rules that govern it. For Duke, the issue is not just philosophical. It is a practical headache that affects roster building, player movement and the planning that has to happen well beyond the current season.

Diaz pointed to the confusion created by recent player transfers and the absence of clear direction for the 2027 recruiting cycle, all while the sport waits on unresolved NCAA rule disputes. The lingering tampering case involving Clemson and Ole Miss is part of that larger cloud, and for the Blue Devils, the bigger concern is simple enough: without structural clarity, it is hard to know what the next roster looks like, or even how to properly prepare for it. Duke Faces A Pressure Test As Surprise Start Meets Tougher Stretch

Duke heads into the Boston College game with a chance to turn a timely win over Virginia into something more lasting. At 5-2 under Manny Diaz, the Blue Devils have put themselves in position to keep building, but the next few weeks will tell a lot more about where this team really stands as the schedule starts to tighten.

Boston College is the immediate focus, though the bigger picture is easy to see from Durham. Duke wants momentum before back-to-back challenges against NC State and Miami, and the way the Blue Devils handle this stretch will say plenty about how far the progress under Diaz has come. [Read more 🡒]
