Duke has no shortage of momentum on the recruiting trail under Jon Scheyer, and the Blue Devils have already made noise in the 2027 class. But when it comes to 5-star combo guard Adan Diggs, the path to Durham looks far from straightforward.
Diggs trimmed his list to seven schools on Thursday: Duke, Arizona, North Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, USC, and Kansas. The 247Sports 2027 Composite Rankings have him at No. 6 overall and No. 1 among combo guards in the class.
Duke got involved late, offering Diggs in late June. The Millennium (AZ) standout already has an official visit set for Arizona on Sept. 25, and he plans to take official visits to every school still in the mix.
At 6-foot-4, Diggs is one of only two true guards Duke has offered in the 2027 class. The other is Beckham Black, the No. 1 overall player in the class according to the 247Sports Composite.
Still, even with Diggs’ talent and the long list of contenders, Duke fans probably shouldn’t get too comfortable here. The reason starts with the Blue Devils’ own guard situation.
Duke is set to bring in a loaded backcourt for the 2026-27 season, with John Blackwell, Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer, and 5-star freshman Deron Rippey Jr. forming what could be the deepest guard room in college basketball. And thanks to the NCAA’s new age-based eligibility model, all four could also be back in 2027-28.
Foster and Blackwell are both true seniors and can return to Durham in a year, though it’s impossible to know in September 2026 whether either one will actually do that. The bigger point is that Duke has real flexibility at the position a year from now.
Boozer will be heading into his sophomore year, while Rippey will be a freshman. In a college basketball world that values continuity and experience more than ever, and with the 2027 class generally viewed as weak, Scheyer and his staff would likely prefer to keep veteran guards in place rather than turn to a 5-star newcomer.
That doesn’t close the door on Diggs, but it does make his recruitment one to watch with caution for Duke fans.
