Duke Opens ACC Home Slate With One Big Test Waiting

Duke volleyball faces a critical weekend as it opens its ACC home slate against formidable foes Georgia Tech and Clemson, aiming to build momentum with standout performances from its top-ranked players.

Duke’s first ACC road trip of the season gave the Blue Devils a split, and now the focus shifts to Cameron Indoor Stadium for the home conference opener. Georgia Tech comes in Friday at 6:30 p.m., with Clemson waiting Sunday at 1 p.m. Duke is 9-3 overall and 1-1 in league play after beating Wake Forest in five sets and then falling to NC State in four.

That win at Wake Forest was the kind of opener Duke has gotten used to. For the third straight season, the Blue Devils started ACC play with a victory, and Ashby Zubchevich was the engine behind it. She piled up a team-best 26.5 points, finishing with 19 kills, five service aces and a career-high five blocks.

Nataly Moravec kept that momentum rolling against NC State. Even in the loss, she delivered her third 20-plus kill match of the season, leading Duke with 21 kills.

Across the weekend, Moravec totaled 38 kills and hit .264, averaging 4.22 kills per set and 4.72 points per set over nine sets. On the season, she sits fourth in the ACC in kills per set at 4.32 and fourth in points per set at 4.79.

Zubchevich is right there too, ranking sixth in the league in kills per set at 3.91 and fifth in points per set at 4.73. Duke is the only Power Four team with two players in the top five of their conference in points per set.

The numbers around the Blue Devils tell the same story. Nikki Quinn leads the ACC in assists per set at 11.00, and Duke ranks third in the conference and 18th nationally with 13.11 assists per set.

The offense is producing 14.02 kills per set, good for 21st in the country and third in the ACC. Zubchevich is also making noise at the service line, leading the ACC and ranking 12th nationally with 0.65 aces per set after her five-ace performance against Wake Forest.

As a team, Duke has 97 aces, or 2.16 per set, which puts the Blue Devils first in the ACC and 33rd nationally in total aces, while their per-set mark ranks first in the conference and 10th in the country.

Georgia Tech arrives with some early ACC momentum of its own. The Yellow Jackets are 10-3 and 2-0 in conference play after sweeping Virginia Tech and Virginia last weekend.

They also picked up 54 points in this week’s AVCA-Taraflex Poll, placing them 29th in the country. Alida Bennour was named ACC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 28 after posting 4.33 kills per set on a .438 hitting percentage.

Against Virginia, she had 21 kills on 34 swings with two errors.

Duke has not beaten Georgia Tech since Oct. 27, 2017, and the Yellow Jackets have taken the last eight meetings. Still, the series has been tight overall, with Duke holding a 45-28 advantage. At home, the Blue Devils are 21-12 against Georgia Tech.

Clemson comes in on the other side of the conference standings, still looking for its first ACC win at 6-8 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Tigers opened conference play at home and dropped both matches, falling to Virginia Tech in five sets and Virginia in four.

Offensively, Anika Groom has carried Clemson with a team-high 163 kills and 3.08 kills per set. She also leads the Tigers with 183.5 points. Even with the early losses, Clemson tops the ACC in digs per set, team digs, team assists, team attacks per set, team total attacks and team kills.

Duke has controlled the matchup for a while now. The Blue Devils have won six straight against Clemson and are 12-1 in the last 13 meetings.

Clemson’s last win at Cameron Indoor Stadium came on Oct. 12, 2012.

Dukes Loaded Roster Faces One Question That Could Define The Season

Duke enters the season with the kind of roster that usually makes opposing coaches uneasy and beat writers busy. Seniors Caleb Foster and John Blackwell are back, junior Patrick Ngongba II returns, and freshmen Cayden Boozer and Dame Sarr add even more talent to a group already defined by size and depth. There are multiple players on hand who can credibly take meaningful minutes, which is part of what makes this team so intriguing before the games even start.

The question is how that abundance gets managed once the schedule tightens and the stakes rise. Deep college basketball teams are rare, and even the most talented ones often have to narrow things down when the pressure mounts, which is why Dukes rotation will be one of the defining storylines of the season. The talent is obvious; the challenge is deciding how much of it can actually fit when the biggest moments arrive. [Read more 🡒]

Dukes Bye Week Could Reshape The ACC Race Fast

Duke heads into its bye week at 4-0, sitting among a small group of unbeaten ACC teams after stacking up wins over Illinois, Tulane, Stanford and William & Mary. For a program trying to stay relevant in a conference that still feels wide open, the timing matters almost as much as the record, because the Blue Devils can watch the rest of the league shift around them without having to take a snap.

North Carolinas home game against No. 3 Notre Dame adds another layer to the league picture, while Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech both enter the week at 4-0 and are positioned to meet the same kind of pressure Duke is temporarily avoiding. When the dust settles, one of those unbeaten ACC peers will have been forced into a tougher spot in the standings, and Dukes quiet week could end up feeling a lot more important than it looks right now. Duke Opens With One Big Test For Both Programs

Duke swimming and diving will get its 2026-27 season underway Friday at 5 p.m. against Davidson, a meet that offers an early look at where both programs stand after a strong spring. The women finished tied for 21st at last seasons NCAA Championships, while the men ended up fourth at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships, giving head coach Brian Barnes a solid base as he enters his fourth season.

There is also plenty of turnover for Barnes to manage right away, with 16 freshmen arriving and graduate transfer Alex Seybold coming over from Cal Poly. The staff will have a fresh face, too, as Colin Gibson has joined as an assistant coach, adding another layer of change to a roster that will be under the microscope from the first weekend of the season.
