Duke Now Faces One Big Test After Painful UNC Finish

Duke's field hockey team falls just short in their regular season finale but still secures a top seed for the ACC Championship.

Duke’s bid to finish the regular season with a statement win came up just short Friday night, as the No. 6 Blue Devils dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 10 North Carolina in the finale.

The loss leaves Duke at 12-4 overall and 6-2 in ACC play, but the Blue Devils still locked up the No. 3 seed for the ACC Championship and will head into the postseason with at least a share of the conference regular season title for the third time in program history.

Sophomore Lily Soldan provided Duke’s lone goal, with junior Ashley Stockdale picking up the assist. In goal, Kaiya Chepow turned in another steady performance with seven saves, and graduate student Philine Klas added her third defensive save of the season.

The game started slowly, with both teams spending much of the opening 15 minutes searching for rhythm. North Carolina had the only two shots in the first period, and Chepow handled both.

The Tar Heels broke through in the 20th minute when Ryleigh Heck slipped one into the top-left corner for the first goal of the night. Duke responded with more pressure in the third quarter, earning four corners and holding a 4-2 edge in shots in the period, but North Carolina struck again, with Heck scoring her second of the night to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Duke finally got on the board in the 49th minute after a scramble in front. Alaina McVeigh’s initial shot was stopped by UNC goalkeeper Tessa Shahbo, but Stockdale gathered the rebound at the top left of the circle and sent in a reverse that Soldan redirected into the cage at 48:43.

That goal gave Duke life, and Chepow kept the margin at one with two important saves. The Blue Devils pushed hard for the equalizer late, taking the final three shots of the game and earning two penalty corners. They created two strong chances off those set pieces, including one with just over a minute left, but Shahbo denied both looks to close it out for North Carolina.

Duke’s six-game winning streak against NFHCA top-20 teams came to an end, and the Blue Devils are now 6-3 against ranked opponents in 2026.

Still, the bigger picture is intact. Duke’s third seed is set for the ACC Championship, which runs Nov. 3-6 in Chapel Hill. The Blue Devils open postseason play against No. 6 seed Boston College in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.

Soldan’s goal was her third of the season, while Stockdale recorded her third assist. Chepow’s seven-save night marked her eighth multi-save effort of the year and her second-most saves in 2026.

Nate Sheppard Just Pushed Duke Into A Much Bigger Conversation

Nate Sheppard turned a routine late-season game into a statement performance against Boston College, and in the process pushed Duke into a much bigger conversation. The sophomore running back set multiple school records in the win, including five rushing touchdowns in a single game and 18 total touchdowns on the season, giving the Blue Devils a centerpiece who has been as productive as any player in the country.

For Duke, the timing matters as much as the numbers. Sheppards surge helped secure bowl eligibility and reinforced his standing among the FBS leaders in all-purpose yards and total touchdowns, the kind of production that changes how opponents prepare and how the rest of the schedule looks from here. Duke Just Added More Fuel To A North Carolina Basketball Debate

Duke enters the new college basketball season with the kind of roster and preseason buzz that usually keeps the conversation centered on Durham. Under Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils are again viewed as a national contender, and CBS has gone so far as to label them the best team in North Carolina. For a program that has spent decades setting the standard, that kind of attention is less a surprise than a reminder of how high the bar remains.

The comparison matters because North Carolina basketball arguments never stay quiet for long, especially when Duke is ranked among the top five before the first meaningful games are played. The Blue Devils have history, talent and expectations all working in their favor, which only sharpens the debate with the other programs in the state. However the season unfolds, Duke has already added another layer to the annual question of who holds the edge in North Carolina. [Read more 🡒]

Nate Sheppard Just Gave Duke Fans A Real Reason To Believe

A lopsided win over Boston College gave Duke football more than another mark in the victory column. The Blue Devils rolled to a 47-2 finish, moved to 6-2 and clinched bowl eligibility, with the defense controlling the game from start to finish and keeping the Eagles out of the end zone.

Nate Sheppard was the centerpiece of it all, setting Duke records with five rushing touchdowns in one game and pushing his season total to 14 on the ground. Boston Colleges only points came on a botched hold on a PAT that was returned for a safety, a fittingly strange footnote to a night when Duke looked as complete as it has all season. [Read more 🡒]
