Duke’s ACC Championship run ended Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, where the Blue Devils were edged 2-1 by No. 6 seed Boston College in the quarterfinals at Karen Shelton Stadium.
The loss sent Duke to 12-5 on the season and dropped the Blue Devils to 22-44 in the ACC Championship. Boston College moved on after getting the better of a game that swung heavily in the Eagles’ favor early, then turned into a late push from Duke that came up just short.
Sophomore Shae Wozniak accounted for Duke’s only goal, her fourth of the season, and classmate Juliette Schulten picked up the assist for her second helper of the year. Duke also finished with a 10-9 advantage in shots and earned five penalty corners, even though it did not register an attempt in the first half.
Boston College controlled the opening stretch. Junior goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow stopped the Eagles’ first shot two minutes into the game, but BC broke through on a set piece in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Duke had a penalty corner in the 13th minute, but couldn’t turn it into a clean look.
The Eagles added another before halftime, with Maren Boyle scoring her second goal of the night at 17:37 to make it 2-0.
Duke finally found some rhythm in the third quarter, firing off five shots and putting three on target. After being turned away twice at the doorstep, the Blue Devils got on the board in the 44th minute. On the initial penalty corner insert, Schulten sent a shot toward the cage and Wozniak redirected it in at 43:42 to cut the deficit in half.
The Blue Devils kept pressing in the fourth quarter and eventually pulled Chepow for an extra attacker late. Duke generated five more shots, including a breakaway chance for graduate student Alaina McVeigh, but never found the equalizer.
Chepow finished with two saves, bringing her season total to 102.
Duke now waits for the NCAA Championship field to be announced Nov. 8 at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com. The first and second rounds are scheduled for Nov. 13 and 15 on campus sites.

Dukes Bowl Picture Is Taking Shape In A Way Fans Will Notice
Dukes bowl picture is starting to come into focus in a way that should have Blue Devils fans paying attention. After the 47-2 win over Boston College, the program became bowl-eligible for the fifth straight season, a run that has quietly become part of the standard in Durham. Along the way, Nate Sheppard made his own mark by setting a school record with five touchdowns, giving the night both a milestone feel and a reminder of how much firepower this team can bring when it is rolling.
The next question is less about whether Duke will be playing in December and more about where the destination lands. Various outlets have already floated a range of possible matchups, with projected opponents including Arizona, Nebraska, South Florida, Wisconsin and Oregon, a mix that reflects just how many directions the postseason could still take. For a team that has built consistency over the past five seasons, the bowl assignment will add another layer to a year that is already trending toward a familiar ending, only with one more twist still to come. Manny Diaz Just Gave Duke Fans A Reason To Exhale
Dukes rise under Manny Diaz has naturally put the program back in the middle of the coaching rumor mill, and this week the head coach took a direct swing at the noise. Diaz addressed speculation that had linked him to other openings, including Florida State, and said he is happy at Duke, brushing aside the internet chatter that tends to follow any coach whose team starts drawing attention.
The timing only added to the buzz, with Florida State recently moving on from Mike Norvell and Diazs Florida ties making him an obvious name for outsiders to float. Diaz also acknowledged that Dukes success has created another layer of uncertainty, with speculation spilling over to players and possible transfers, but for now he made it clear where he says he wants to be. Duke Opened With A Bigger Toby Fournier Concern Than Fans Wanted
Duke opened the season with a result that should have offered some comfort, but the bigger concern was sitting on the sideline. Star forward Toby Fournier missed the opener against Green Bay because of a lower leg injury, and there is still no set timetable for her return, leaving the Blue Devils to navigate the early part of the schedule without one of their most important players.
The good news was a 76-60 win, powered by senior Riley Nelson and junior Arianna Roberson with 15 points apiece, but the injury situation looms larger than one November victory. Coach Kara Lawson said she hopes Fournier can get back soon, and with tougher games ahead, Duke will need both the depth it showed in the opener and a clearer picture of when its star forward might be available again.
