Duke Keeps Finding A Way As Home Dominance Grows

In a thrilling overtime finish, Alaina McVeigh's decisive golden goal clinched a victory for Duke against Saint Joseph's, extending their impressive home winning streak.

Graduate student Alaina McVeigh needed just 1:43 of overtime to finish the job for No. 3 Duke on Sunday, sending the Blue Devils past Saint Joseph’s, 2-1, in Durham.

McVeigh’s winner came on a shot tucked into the bottom-left corner and gave Duke its seventh straight victory. It also marked her fourth goal of the season and her first since Sept. 13 against VCU.

Duke spent most of the afternoon chasing the game after Saint Joseph’s struck first in the third minute. Adele Jardemar scored off a penalty corner at 2:34 to put the Hawks ahead 1-0, and the Blue Devils were forced to dig out of the hole from there.

They had an immediate response in mind. Junior Ashley Stockdale nearly leveled the score about 90 seconds later, but her shot hit the post.

That near-miss was part of a first half in which Duke piled up chances without cashing in. The Blue Devils outshot Saint Joseph’s 7-0 in the second quarter and earned four penalty corners, but Hawks goalkeeper Avianna Wagner kept the home side off the board with three saves to preserve the 1-0 halftime lead.

The pressure kept building after the break. Duke controlled the third quarter with eight more shots while limiting Saint Joseph’s to two, and the Blue Devils kept coming at Wagner in the fourth. After four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the period, including two more saves from Wagner, Duke finally broke through in the 56th minute on a penalty-corner sequence.

Junior Madison Beach started the play from the top of the circle, then worked the ball to sophomore Juliette Schulten on the left side. Schulten sent a shot toward the cage, and junior Callie Rogers got a stick on it to redirect the ball past Wagner and tie the game, 1-1, with less than five minutes left in regulation.

That was Rogers’ fourth goal of the season. Beach earned a career-high two assists, and Schulten added one more.

Overtime didn’t last long. Beach found McVeigh on the right side, and the Landsdale, Pennsylvania, standout carried the ball deeper into the circle before ending it at 61:43.

The win pushed Duke to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. The Blue Devils are now 7-0 at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium and have won seven straight this season.

Duke finished with a 23-4 edge in shots and generated eight penalty corners. The defense also held its seventh opponent this season to fewer than five shots.

Head coach Pam Bustin picked up her 197th win at Duke and her 359th overall.

McVeigh’s goal and an assist against Syracuse on Friday moved her into a tie for ninth all-time on Duke’s career points list with 117, including 49 goals and 19 assists. She and Rogers now sit second and third on the team in scoring, with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Duke has now won 2-2 in overtime/shootout games and was held scoreless in the first half for just the third time in 2026, with all three coming in the last three games. The Blue Devils are 3-0 in those games.

The Blue Devils head out for a four-game road stretch next, beginning with a West Coast trip to Stanford on Oct. 9 and No. 20 California on Oct.

  1. Both games will stream live on ACCNX.
