No. 8 Duke wasted no time making its mark in ACC play Friday night, blanking No. 9 Virginia 1-0 at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium behind a first-quarter strike from junior Julia Boehringer.
The Blue Devils controlled the flow early and never really let go. They finished with a 7-3 shot advantage, put four corners on the board, and got the only goal they needed in the opening period. Duke also handled the defensive side with the same kind of authority, limiting Virginia to just three total shot attempts and keeping the Cavaliers off the board for the first time this season.
Boehringer broke through in the 14th minute, scoring at the 13:30 mark to give Duke a lead it would protect the rest of the way. The chance came off Duke’s third set piece of the quarter, with senior Maggie Kondrath serving as the inserter and junior Callie Rogers providing the stick stop before Boehringer finished from the right side. It was Boehringer’s first goal of the season, and it pushed her to four points on the year with one goal and two assists.
Duke set the tone immediately in the first quarter, owning a 6-1 shot edge and a 4-1 advantage in corners. After that, the game tightened into a more even, back-and-forth battle across the middle two quarters. Virginia’s Emma Watchilla had the lone shot over the second and third periods, but it missed wide.
Even as the Cavaliers tried to mount pressure late, Duke stayed composed. Virginia pulled goalie Nilou Lempers with 6:43 left and went with an extra attacker, but the move didn’t crack the Blue Devil defense. Two minutes later, Caitlin Connell got a look at an equalizer, only for junior goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow to turn it away.
From there, Duke closed the door. The Blue Devils controlled the final five minutes, pushed the ball into the offensive third and kept Virginia from finding any real late push.
Chepow finished with two saves and picked up her fifth win of the season, along with her third shutout. Duke earned its fourth clean sheet of the year and its first shutout win over Virginia in 2026.
The result gave Duke its third straight win, moved the Blue Devils to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in ACC play, and kept them perfect at 4-0 at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. It was also Duke’s first win over a ranked opponent this season, improving to 1-2 against NFHCA top-20 teams in 2026.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak against Virginia and gave Duke its 24th all-time win in the series. It also marked the 355th career win for head coach Pam Bustin and her 193rd at Duke.
Duke’s defense made the stat line stand out even more: Virginia’s three shot attempts were its fewest of the season, four fewer than its previous low of seven at Rutgers on Sept. 11. The Cavaliers were held without a shot attempt for nearly 30 minutes, from the 5:56 mark of the first quarter until the 35:09 mark of the third period.
The Blue Devils continue ACC play next week with a trip to No. 4 Wake Forest on Sept. 25 before returning home to face Boston College on Sept.

For a program that usually draws heavy national attention, the concern is not about interest so much as access. Dukes 3-0 Start Has Fans Believing This Team Looks Different
A 35-7 win over Stanford pushed Duke to 3-0 under Manny Diaz and gave the Blue Devils another look that felt more complete than the box score alone.
