Duke football left Champaign with the kind of win that can steady a team early in the season. After getting pushed around at the start and staring at an early hole, the Blue Devils flipped the script and beat Illinois 31-27 on the road.
That finish looked a lot different from last September, when Duke was the one taking the hit in Durham in a 45-19 loss to the Fighting Illini. This time, Illinois scored on its first four drives and controlled the clock for long stretches in the first half, but Duke never let the game get away. By halftime, the Blue Devils had trimmed the margin to 24-21 thanks in large part to sophomore running back Nate Sheppard and graduate quarterback Walker Eget.
Sheppard was the difference-maker all afternoon, and he was already carving up Illinois before the break. Coming off a career-high 227 rushing yards in Duke’s 17-3 win over Tulane last week, he finished the first half against the Illini with 101 rushing yards and a touchdown, plus two catches for 18 yards and another score. He kept breaking tackles and turning small openings into chunk gains.
Eget matched that energy with a clean, efficient first half. He went 7-for-10 for 104 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions before the break, while graduate wide receiver Jonah Burton added three catches for 57 yards and a score.
Duke came out of halftime and immediately put together the kind of drive that changes a road game. The Blue Devils went 75 yards in nine plays, and Eget found Sheppard for another touchdown to give Duke its first lead at 28-24.
Illinois answered with a field goal after Duke’s defense limited the damage on a 46-yard, 11-play drive, but the Blue Devils stayed in control at 28-27. On the next possession, Duke dealt with a first-and-30 in Illinois territory because of penalties and still worked its way into range. Redshirt sophomore kicker Cosme Salas drilled a 39-yarder to stretch the lead to 31-27.
From there, the defense delivered the plays that sealed it. Illinois got into Duke territory on the next drive, but the Blue Devils forced a fourth-down stop inside the 20.
After a Duke three-and-out, Evan Smith came through with an interception near midfield. Another three-and-out handed Illinois the ball back at its own 20, but Duke’s defense slammed the door again and kept the Illini from crossing midfield with under three minutes left.
Sheppard finished with 147 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown on 24 carries, along with five receptions for 41 yards and two scores. Eget completed 15 of 21 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
The game was wide open statistically, too. Duke and Illinois combined for 758 total yards, and Illinois senior wide receiver Collin Dixon had a huge day with 11 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns.
Duke is now 2-0 overall and 0-0 in ACC play. The Blue Devils will host Stanford next Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in their 2026 conference opener, set for 4 p.m. ET on The CW.

Duke's Huge Road Win Came With One Worry Fans Can't Ignore
Dukes 31-27 road win at Illinois gave the Blue Devils a valuable early-season rsum piece, and it came with a lot to like on both sides of the ball. Walker Eget managed the offense well, Jonah Burton provided the top receiving spark, and Evan Smith delivered the kind of defensive play that can swing a game away from home.
Still, the final minutes left one concern hanging over an otherwise encouraging night. Egets late injury was enough to put a brief scare into the Duke sideline, and while the offense held together, the Blue Devils are now left hoping their quarterback can keep building on that performance. Jared Richardson, meanwhile, is still waiting for his season to catch up to the rest of the attack. [Read more 🡒]
Former Duke Star Mark Williams Hit With Another Tough NBA Setback
Former Duke center Mark Williams is facing another setback in the NBA, where his career has already been shaped by injuries and interruptions. Now with the Phoenix Suns, Williams is coming off a summer that was supposed to build momentum after four professional seasons, but instead has turned into another frustrating stop on the road.
The issue traces back to an offseason workout, where he suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Williams had surgery to repair the injury and is expected to be out for an extended period, leaving yet another question mark around a former Blue Devil whose talent has never been the concern, only the availability. Duke Is Hanging Around At Illinois For One Very Revealing Reason
Duke is still in the thick of its non-conference game at Illinois after a first half that swung back and forth, with the Blue Devils answering early pressure and finding enough offense to keep the margin tight. Illinois built its lead with a sharp passing start and the kind of early rhythm that put Duke on its heels, but the Blue Devils stayed attached thanks to a run game that kept producing usable drives and helped prevent the game from getting away.
Nate Sheppard has been the centerpiece of that response, giving Duke a much-needed spark as both a runner and a receiver while the Blue Devils leaned on him to steady the offense. Both teams also made their share of fourth-down gambles, underscoring how little separation there has been, and Duke heads into the second half still with a chance to turn an uneven opening 30 minutes into something bigger.
