Duke’s season is already rolling, and the Blue Devils have made a staff move to go with it.
With the 2026-27 campaign officially underway after Monday night’s win over Army, Duke added former wing Rodney Hood to Jon Scheyer’s staff as a coaching intern. The move gives the Blue Devils another familiar face around a program that once again enters the year with major expectations.
Hood arrives with a long pro résumé behind him. He spent eight seasons in the NBA, suiting up for the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Memphis Hustle. His most recent stop came with Memphis’ G League team in 2024, and after taking some time away, he’s now stepping into coaching.
He’ll join a staff that already includes Chris Carrawell, Emanuel Dildy, Tyler Thornton, KJ Conklin, Jayce McCain, Mike Schrage, and Alexander Powell. It’s a group Scheyer described as having a strong blend of experience as the new season gets going.
After the exhibition win over Army, Scheyer talked about Hood’s addition and noted that in his first year back as an assistant under Coach K, he coached Rodney. Scheyer called him “a great player in college and a great pro player.”
Hood’s Duke playing career was short but productive. In one season with the Blue Devils, he averaged 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 0.7 steals. He was then selected No. 23 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by Utah.
Over 448 NBA games, Hood averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.7 steals.

Dukes Bowl Picture Is Taking Shape In A Way Fans Will Notice
Dukes bowl picture is starting to come into focus after a 47-2 rout of Boston College pushed the Blue Devils into bowl eligibility for a fifth straight season. The win not only kept the momentum rolling, it also gave the program another reminder of how steady the climb has been under this run of success, with the postseason now firmly part of the conversation again.
Nate Sheppards school-record five touchdowns only sharpened the attention around where Duke might land next, and the early projections have already put the Blue Devils in a range of intriguing matchups. Different outlets have floated possible pairings with Arizona, Nebraska, South Florida, Wisconsin and Oregon, which means the waiting game now shifts from whether Duke will be bowling to where the Blue Devils will be headed when the bracket finally settles. Duke Faces A Huge Road Test As Injured Defense Meets Clemson
Dukes ACC Championship opener at Clemson arrives with plenty of context attached, starting with a road setting that has not been kind to visiting teams and a matchup against one of the leagues more familiar postseason names. The Blue Devils head into the first-round game at Historic Riggs Field on Nov. 4 with Jack Ottley and Ethan Congleton carrying much of the creative and finishing load, a useful pairing as Duke tries to navigate a tournament bracket that sends the winner on to face either North Carolina or California.
The bigger concern is what Duke can bring defensively after dealing with injuries that have complicated the back line and forced the staff to manage minutes carefully. A few players have returned recently, which gives the Blue Devils some needed stability, but this is still the kind of test that can expose any lingering rust. Against Clemson, Duke will need those reinforcements to hold up quickly, because one slip in a single-elimination setting can end the season in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]
Manny Diaz Just Gave Duke Fans A Reason To Stay Worried
Manny Diaz tried to shut down the noise this week, publicly denying any interest in leaving Duke for the Florida State opening after Mike Norvells departure. He said he is happy in Durham and locked in on the current season, framing the speculation as nothing more than a distraction for a program trying to keep its footing.
Still, the fact that Diaz had to address the rumor at all says plenty about how quickly this kind of chatter can spread around a successful coach. Florida State is a job with real pull, and while there has been no official development, the conversation alone is enough to keep Duke fans on edge until the coaching carousel settles down.
