Duke may not be getting the national buzz to match its start, but the Blue Devils are sitting right in the thick of the ACC race after three weeks.
There’s a pretty obvious gap between Miami and everyone else right now, but Duke has played its way into that next group and looks like one of the league’s early risers after a strong opening to the 2026 season. The Blue Devils’ resume already includes the kind of out-of-conference win that gets attention, and they backed it up in conference play with a convincing showing against Stanford.
At the top, Miami remains in a class by itself at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in ACC play. The Hurricanes have been dominant, even if Wake Forest made things a little more interesting on Friday than some might have expected. A big reason Miami sits so far ahead is Duke transfer quarterback Darian Mensah, who is the Heisman Trophy favorite after three weeks.
Louisville holds down the No. 2 spot at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Cardinals dropped a tight opener to Ole Miss, then turned around and grabbed an important Week 3 win over SMU. That result helped settle the No. 2 debate, and Louisville looks like Miami’s biggest threat, even if the two would only meet in the ACC Championship Game.
Duke comes in at No. 3 at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. No ACC team has a better nonconference win than Duke’s road victory at Illinois in Week 2, and the Blue Devils followed that up by handling Stanford 35-7 in their ACC opener. Star running back Nate Sheppard was again a major factor in that win.
SMU checks in at No. 4 after falling on the road to Louisville. The Mustangs are still near the top of the league picture, but they have some proving to do, especially with their best win so far coming in a close road game against a mediocre Florida State team.
Virginia Tech is one of the more intriguing teams in the middle of the rankings at No. 5. The Hokies finished nonconference play at 3-0 in James Franklin’s first season on the sideline, and their 35-26 road win at Maryland in Week 3 only added to the sense that they could be a sneaky factor in the ACC race.
Pitt sits right behind them at No. 6, also unbeaten at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. The Panthers opened with an offensive explosion against Miami (OH), then leaned on defense in wins over UCF and Syracuse. They get Bucknell next before a major matchup at Virginia Tech that could carry serious ACC title weight.
Virginia drops to No. 7 after what was easily one of the league’s most disappointing results of the week. The Cavaliers were soundly beaten at home by West Virginia, a rough follow-up to their dominant win over NC State to start the season. After reaching last year’s ACC Championship Game against Duke, Virginia now has work to do to get back into that conversation.
Clemson is No. 8 after a comeback win over North Carolina. The Tigers were embarrassed by LSU in Week 1 and then beat Georgia Southern in a game that didn’t exactly calm anyone down, but the rally against UNC at least gave Dabo Swinney’s team something to build on with a difficult stretch ahead.
Wake Forest lands at No. 9 after staying highly competitive in a 13-point loss to Miami. The Demon Deacons may climb in the coming weeks, but they have a tough one coming up with a road trip to Louisville.
California is No. 10 after rebounding from its loss to UCLA with back-to-back wins, including a road victory at Syracuse in Week 2. With one of the nation’s elite quarterbacks leading the way, the Golden Bears have the look of a difficult matchup.
North Carolina is next at No. 11 after letting one get away against Clemson. The Tar Heels now face a brutal three-game stretch after a Week 4 bye, with Notre Dame on deck followed by road games at Pitt and Duke.
Florida State checks in at No. 12.
The Seminoles have shown enough to suggest they may be better than some think, with a close loss to SMU and a road game at Alabama where they led 21-6 late in the second quarter before the Crimson Tide surged to a 50-36 win. Central Arkansas is the immediate chance to reset, and then Virginia comes to Tallahassee in a game that could matter a lot.
Georgia Tech is No. 13 after getting its first win of the season over Mercer following an 0-2 start against Colorado and Tennessee. That Colorado loss already looks worse after the Buffaloes were blown out by Northwestern in Week 3.
NC State falls to No. 14 after a loss that will stick around for a while. The Wolfpack had Vanderbilt beaten, then suffered one of the most bizarre late-game collapses in recent memory.
Leading by three with seconds left and holding the ball, NC State only needed to avoid disaster. Instead, veteran QB CJ Daniels fumbled in the end zone, Vanderbilt recovered for a touchdown, and the Commodores escaped with an improbable win.
Boston College is No. 15 at 2-1 after consecutive wins over Rutgers and Maine. The Eagles opened with a 19-point loss to Cincinnati, but they’ve steadied things since then. The schedule gets tougher now, starting with Virginia Tech visiting Chestnut Hill this weekend.
Syracuse sits at No. 16 after back-to-back losses, dropping a home game to Cal by three and then falling by two touchdowns at Pitt. Fran Brown has work to do, and fast.
Stanford rounds out the rankings at No. 17. The Cardinal are improved from last season, but they’re still at the bottom of the ACC standings after Duke controlled the line of scrimmage in a 35-7 win and handed Stanford its second conference loss already.
