Elite 8 Thriller: UConn Stuns Duke with Last-Second Heroics
In a heart-stopping finish at the Elite 8 of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, Duke found themselves on the wrong side of a dramatic comeback by UConn, falling 73-72 in the final seconds. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Duke holding a slim 72-70 lead and just 10 seconds on the clock.
UConn's Silas Demary Jr. had just made one of two crucial free throws, capping off an impressive rally from a daunting 19-point first-half deficit. Duke's Dame Sarr inbounded the ball to Cameron Boozer, who quickly returned it to Sarr. Knowing UConn would likely foul, Sarr made a strategic pass to Cayden Boozer near half court, trusting in his teammate's free throw prowess.
"Cayden is one of our best free throw shooters," Sarr explained. "After I passed it, I felt like it was out of my hands. We win and lose as a team."
But the Huskies had other plans. Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins executed a perfect trap on Boozer, forcing a turnover.
Mullins, who had struggled from beyond the arc all night, found himself with the ball after a deflection and a quick dish from Alex Karaban. With ice in his veins, Mullins launched a deep three from nearly 35 feet out, sinking it with just 0.4 seconds remaining.
Duke could only watch as the Huskies snatched the lead for the first time since the opening moments of the game. It was a gut-wrenching 13th turnover for the Blue Devils, their third in the final four minutes, proving costly.
Reflecting on the play, Boozer lamented, "Coach told me to be strong with the ball. I wasn’t, and I feel like I let us down."
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, while acknowledging the pivotal turnover, emphasized the broader picture. "We needed to secure it.
I was ready for a timeout, but it's not just about that one play. It's about every moment that led us here."
For the top-seeded Blue Devils, ending the season with a 36-3 record, it was a bitter conclusion to what had been a promising campaign. They were aiming for back-to-back Elite 8 appearances, but UConn's resilience and Mullins' heroics dashed those hopes in a stunning twist of fate.
