Duke Heads To Virginia With Major Concerns On Both Sides

Despite numerous injuries plaguing their lineup, the Duke Blue Devils are determined to overcome recent setbacks and secure a win against the Virginia Cavaliers.

Duke heads into Friday night’s road trip to Virginia with a thin margin for error and a long injury list to match.

The Blue Devils are trying to stop a two-game slide after losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina by a combined seven points, and they still have a path to a strong season at 4-2 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. But the timing of this one is tricky. Virginia comes in at 4-3, 2-2 in the league, and both teams are dealing with a heavy dose of personnel concerns.

Virginia’s injury report is the more crowded of the two, with 24 players listed and 20 ruled out. Duke’s side is shorter, but the names missing or in doubt matter.

On the offensive line, Craycraft will sit out for a second straight game, a notable blow against a Virginia defense that has brought down opposing quarterbacks 14 times this year, sixth-most in the ACC. Walker Eget has only been sacked twice this season, and Craycraft’s absence takes away a multi-year starter from a unit that already needs to hold up against pressure.

The secondary is hit hard too. Smith has contributed plays this season, while Pellicciotta has been one of Duke’s most useful pieces on defense and in the return game.

He has 33 total tackles, which is tied for the team lead, along with a pass deflection. He’s also handled eight punt returns for 85 yards.

Stone is another key name to watch in the back end. With Pellicciotta already ruled out for the Cavaliers game, Duke could be down two of its top safeties. North Texas transfer Patrick Smith-Young was productive against North Carolina last week, but the Blue Devils may still be forced to patch together their safety rotation in a game where they need to get back on track.

Diaz and Co. are facing some serious injury concerns in a spot where Duke badly needs a reset.

Duke Football Faces Urgent Questions After Serious Staffer Allegation

Duke football is dealing with a disturbing off-field allegation involving one of its staff members, as director of player development Ranier Rackley has been accused in a civil lawsuit of sexually abusing a minor during his time as a teacher and coach in the Wake County school system. The suit says the alleged inappropriate touching involved a female ninth-grade student in November 2025 and seeks compensatory and punitive damages, while also naming the Wake County Board of Education for alleged negligence.

Rackley denies the allegations and is not facing criminal charges, but the case puts another layer of scrutiny on a program already caught in the shadow of serious accusations. He left his teaching position in November 2025, and the civil filing now raises questions that extend beyond the courtroom and into how Duke handles a staffer whose background has suddenly become part of a much larger public controversy. Duke Faces A Costly Problem Ahead Of A Huge Virginia Game

With postseason positioning still hanging in the balance, Duke and Virginia are heading into their matchup with plenty at stake and not much margin for error. Both teams have spent much of the season trying to find consistency, which only raises the importance of a game like this one, where a win could help steady the direction of the year and a loss would make the road ahead even more complicated.

For Duke, the injury picture adds another layer of concern. The Blue Devils are already dealing with the absence of center Matt Craycraft and several important defensive pieces, a mix that can affect both the front line and the way the defense operates from snap to snap. Virginia has its own lengthy injury list, but for Duke, the challenge is making sure enough healthy bodies are available to handle a game that already feels like a turning point. [Read more 🡒]

Duke Fans Have One Big Reason To Watch This Elite Wing Closely

Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje arrived at Duke ahead of schedule and has already given the Blue Devils something unusual in todays one-and-done era: a freshman center who plans to stay in college for two years before he is even eligible for the NBA Draft. That kind of timeline matters for a program like Duke, where roster planning and recruiting momentum are always linked, and it gives the staff a little more certainty around the middle of the floor while it keeps building for the future.

Now the next potential future piece is a coveted wing prospect in Colton Hiller, who is reportedly weighing a reclassification that would send him to college a year early. Duke and Florida are said to be his top options, and recruiting insiders believe the Blue Devils are in the best position to land him, though nothing has been finalized yet. For Duke fans, the interest is obvious: a high-end wing could fit neatly into the programs next wave, but the wait for his decision is still very much part of the story. [Read more 🡒]
