Duke heads to Champaign in Week 2 with a chance to settle a score from last season and keep momentum rolling after a 17-3 win over Tulane.
The Blue Devils are back on the road, this time against Illinois, and they’ll be trying to flip the script after the Illini came into Wallace Wade Stadium a year ago and rolled 45-19. A lot has shifted on the Illinois side since then, with the roster hit hard by departures and expectations lowered for the 2026 Illini. Duke, meanwhile, enters with tempered expectations of its own despite winning the ACC Championship in 2025 and taking an obvious step down at quarterback.
Walker Eget had a rough debut in a Duke uniform last week, but Nate Sheppard gave the Blue Devils a lift with a career-best rushing performance against Tulane. That kind of production may need to show up again if Duke wants to pull off what would qualify as a mini-upset on the road.
Odds for the matchup, courtesy of FanDuel, list Duke as a 5.5-point underdog. The total is set at 53.5, with Duke at +188 on the moneyline and Illinois at -230. Those numbers can change.
Duke’s injury report lists WR Javen Nicholas as questionable and OL Roman Fina as out for the season. Illinois did not have any injuries listed in the source.
The game will air on FS1, with Jack Kizer handling play-by-play and Mark Helfrich serving as analyst. Helfrich previously coached Oregon from 2013 to 2016.
Weather could also play a part in Champaign. Saturday is expected to be cloudy and humid, with temperatures in the low 80s and a heat index approaching 90. There’s also a 55% chance of rain, and a second straight kickoff delay is a possibility to watch.
This will be only the fourth meeting between Duke and Illinois, and the Blue Devils are trying to even the series. Illinois has won two of the first three matchups, including last year’s blowout in Durham.
