Duke’s defensive line is one of the more unsettled parts of the roster heading into training camp, and that opens a door for freshman edge Obinna Umeh.
The Blue Devils brought in a wave of new faces after departures forced Manny Diaz and his staff to rebuild quickly, and that has created plenty of competition across the roster. With several newcomers and returners still needing to prove themselves, a number of starting jobs are very much in play.
Among the 14 rookies in Duke’s 2026 recruiting class, Umeh looks like one of the freshmen with a realistic path to the field. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound edge rusher arrives as a 4-star prospect, ranked No. 353 overall and No. 36 among edge players in the 247Sports 2026 Composite Rankings.
Umeh brings length, athleticism and a level of polish that could help him stand out early. He still has plenty of room to grow, but his skill set gives him a chance to contribute sooner than most first-year players.
At minimum, he profiles as useful depth along a line that will need it. And if one of the veterans ahead of him starts slowly, Umeh could work his way into the rotation in Durham.
That veteran group is led by former 4-star recruit Bryce Davis, who is expected to be the breakout name on the defensive front as a sophomore. Tyshon Reed is projected to start at the other defensive end spot, while Preston Watson and former 4-star recruit Owen Wafle are lined up at defensive tackle.
Duke has the pieces to build a productive defensive line in the ACC, but the exact lineup is still unsettled. If Umeh shows well in camp, his size and athletic ability give him a real chance to make an early push for playing time.

A group of students has filed a complaint with the student court over the Krzyzewskiville ticket campout policy, arguing that the line-check system disadvantages hard-of-hearing students in a tradition that has long depended on early mornings, quick responses and physical presence.
The complaint stems from two students who missed a required line check and were shifted to a waiting list after their hearing difficulties kept them from hearing the call. Before Duke has even played a meaningful game, the program is already showing up in early 2027 NBA mock draft chatter.
