Duke Has One Early Problem To Fix Before Better Teams Arrive

Despite a strong win against Army, the Blue Devils aim to tighten their offense against Coastal Carolina's expected zone defense.

Duke gets another crack at smoothing out the rough edges Thursday night in Cameron Indoor, and the Blue Devils will be looking to look a lot more polished than they did in the opener against Army.

The final score against Army was comfortable enough - an 84-50 Duke win - but the performance never quite matched the buzz from a strong three-game exhibition stretch. The offense, in particular, bogged down when Army shifted into a zone.

Afterward, Jon Scheyer took the blame, saying they simply hadn’t practiced against a zone enough to be ready for it. That showed.

That issue is almost certain to stay front and center in the days and weeks ahead, because teams are going to keep testing Duke with zone looks until the Blue Devils prove they can make defenses pay for it.

Coastal Carolina offers a slightly tougher test than Army, at least by preseason projection. KenPom had Army at 338th entering the year, while Coastal Carolina checked in at 247th. The Chanticleers opened their season Monday night and came up just short at home, losing by one point to Eastern Michigan.

Trey Perry was the bright spot for Coastal Carolina in that loss. The sophomore led the way with 20 points, and he’ll be the name Duke has to account for if the Chanticleers want to hang around.

Still, this sets up as a game Duke should control. The Blue Devils are a heavy favorite, and the bigger goal here is less about the opponent and more about finding rhythm before next week’s showdown in Chicago against Michigan State.

From a betting standpoint, FanDuel had the total at 150.5 as of 9am ET on Monday.

The most interesting thing to watch on the Duke side may be John Blackwell. He had a rough regular-season debut, finishing with three points on 1-of-6 shooting, and this feels like the kind of night where Duke tries to get him going early. After what he showed during the exhibition schedule - and over the last two seasons at Wisconsin - a more aggressive Blackwell would be a good sign for the Blue Devils.

Duke should also have a clear advantage inside. Patrick Ngongba and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje figure to be tough for Coastal Carolina to handle if the Blue Devils make a point of leaning on the paint.

Manny Diaz Just Gave Duke Fans A Reason To Stay Worried

Manny Diaz spent part of the week trying to quiet the kind of noise that tends to follow a coach when a bigger job opens up, publicly denying any interest in leaving Duke for Florida State after Mike Norvells departure. Diaz said he is happy in Durham and locked in on the current season, framing the chatter as nothing more than a distraction for a team trying to keep its footing.

Still, the speculation has lingered because Florida State is the kind of opening that naturally pulls a coachs name into the conversation, whether there is anything concrete behind it or not. For Duke, the concern is less about what has been confirmed and more about having to navigate another round of outside attention around a coach who has become central to where the program is headed. Duke's Walk-On Standout Is Suddenly In A Prestigious Award Race

A Duke offensive lineman has pushed his way into the conversation for one of college footballs most distinctive honors, earning a nomination for the 2026 Burlsworth Trophy. The award goes to the most outstanding player in the FBS who started his career as a walk-on, and it has become a meaningful marker for players who built their roles the hard way.

For Duke, the nomination is a reminder of how much value can come from the unheralded parts of a roster, especially along the offensive line. The selection committee will narrow the field later in the year before naming finalists, with the winner set to be unveiled at the December award show, leaving this Blue Devils storyline with plenty of runway still ahead. Caleb Fosters Duke Fight Still Has One Bond Fans Will Love

Caleb Foster has become a familiar kind of holdover for Duke, the lone member of the programs 2023 recruiting class still in Durham after others turned pro or moved on. Injuries have interrupted his path, but he has worked his way back into the rotation and has recently been giving the Blue Devils useful minutes off the bench, a reminder that his story with this team is still very much being written.

Jared McCain may no longer be in the locker room, but the connection between the former teammates clearly has not faded. Foster continues to keep strong ties with the players he came in with, and McCain recently showed up to support him during a photoshoot, a small but telling sign of how much that class still means to one another even as their careers have started to branch off in different directions.
