The 2026 Duke recruiting class arrives with plenty of talent, but this group is stepping into a roster that already has structure in place. Jon Scheyer and his staff built around returning rotation players and veterans, which means these freshmen are more likely to fill important roles than carry the whole show.
That makes the minutes race worth watching, because some of these Blue Devils are going to have to earn their way onto the floor. A few should play right away. Others may need time before they carve out a real lane.
Boumtje Boumtje looks like the freshman most likely to force the issue immediately. At 7'1" and 230 pounds, he has the kind of size and polish that make it hard to keep him on the bench.
He can shoot it from three, pass, create his own offense, and rebound at a high level. Add in elite rim protection and obvious defensive upside, and it’s easy to see why he projects as a starter from day one.
Because he is 17 years old, Boumtje Boumtje has to spend at least two seasons in college before he can even think about the NBA.
Cameron Williams is a different kind of long-term bet, but one with serious upside. The St.
Mary's (AZ) product stands 6'11" with a wingspan of about 7'3", and he already brings real value as a rebounder and rim protector. His athleticism and footwork give him the ability to guard multiple spots, while his shooting form and handle hint at more offensive growth down the line.
As a freshman, he should settle into a complementary two-way role. If he stays for two years, the ceiling is much higher.
Deron Rippey Jr. brings a different energy entirely. The 6'2" guard is loaded with talent, but breaking into major minutes right away will be difficult with Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer, and John Blackwell ahead of him.
Still, Rippey’s defensive edge stands out. He may be undersized, but he plays with hustle, tenacity, and physicality on the perimeter.
He also has the athleticism to finish above the rim and the feel to run the offense. If he spends a year learning behind that group, his sophomore season could be the one where he really pops.
Bryson Howard could end up in a wider range of outcomes than most of the class. There’s a path to around 20 minutes a night, but there’s also a path where he settles closer to eight or 10.
His three-point shot might be the best in the class after Boumtje Boumtje, and his 6'4" stocky frame gives him real 3-and-D potential. If the jumper is falling early, his role could grow quickly.
If not, the presence of other wings like Dame Sarr and Sebastian Wilkins makes it harder to carve out steady time.
Maxime Meyer is the freshman whose path changed most because of the new "5-in-5" eligibility rule. The 4-star seven-footer was a strong redshirt candidate, but that option is off the table now.
Meyer has the tools to become a valuable two-way big man over time: he can run the floor, pass, and protect the rim. The problem is the depth chart in front of him, with Boumtje Boumtje, Drew Scharnowski, and Patrick Ngongba all in the frontcourt mix.
Even so, Meyer looks like someone who should grow into a major rotation piece over the next few years.

ACC Coach Just Made A Serious Claim About Duke's QB Exit
Pat Narduzzis latest comments added another layer to a quarterback saga that already had plenty of intrigue for Duke. The Pitt coach said Miami first tried to lure his own quarterback, Mason Heintschel, before the portal closed, and then warned Manny Diaz that the Hurricanes were coming after Darian Mensah next. For Duke, the timing made the whole sequence hard to ignore, especially with Miami circling a player who had become central to the Blue Devils plans.
Mensah eventually moved on anyway, leaving Duke to sort through the fallout of a transfer that raised questions the program could not fully answer. Diaz has said proving tampering is difficult, so the focus shifted to the contract issue instead, with Mensah departing while under a two-year, $8 million deal. Duke also saw wide receiver Cooper Barkate head to Miami with him after helping fuel the Blue Devils ACC title run, another reminder that this was more than a one-player exit. [Read more 🡒]
Manny Diaz Just Gave Duke Fans A Huge Walker Eget Update
Walker Egets path back into Dukes quarterback mix is starting to come into focus after Manny Diaz offered a positive update at ACC Media Days. The San Jose State transfer is expected to be cleared for practice when fall camp opens in August, a welcome development for a Blue Devils offense that has been waiting to see what he can bring after his spring was wiped out.
The timing matters because Duke did not get a full look at Eget while rising quarterback Dan Mahan handled the reps in the spring. Now the competition for the starting job can finally take shape on the field, and for a team trying to sort out its quarterback picture, getting Eget back in the building is a significant first step. Duke May Finally Have A Young Answer To Its Pass Rush Problem
Manny Diaz is leaning hard into development on defense this season, and that gives Duke a different kind of hope up front. With only two transfers expected to start on that side of the ball, the Blue Devils are banking on recruiting and internal growth to help shape the roster, even as the offense has had to absorb losses to the portal.
A big part of that plan points to Obinna Umeh, a four-star freshman edge rusher whose arrival gives Duke a young piece with real upside. If he settles in quickly, he could work into the rotation and become part of the answer to a pass rush that needs more juice, especially as the season wears on. [Read more 🡒]
