Manny Diaz’s name is already surfacing in the coaching carousel conversation, and it comes on the heels of a breakthrough run at Duke that has made him a target for bigger jobs.
Adam Rittenberg of ESPN listed Diaz among the coaches who could be in line for a move before the 2027 season, and an “industry source” told him Diaz is a “hot name” after guiding the Blue Devils to an ACC championship last year.
“The rise of Manny Diaz,” the source told Rittenberg. “Fired by Miami and now he's a hot name at Duke. Look, you can win at Duke, you can win at a lot of places.”
Diaz’s path to this point has been a sharp one. He went 21-15 at Miami before landing at Duke in 2024 after Mike Elko left for Texas A&M. Since then, Diaz has gone 18-9 in his first two seasons with the Blue Devils, and he signed a new contract extension in April.
Rittenberg argued that Diaz has already shown he can elevate his profile in a bigger opportunity.
“Diaz has taken the right steps to boost his profile,” Rittenberg wrote. “He oversaw a highly successful Penn State defense for two years, and has delivered consecutive nine-win seasons at Duke, which surprisingly won the ACC title last season.
“Duke has increased its commitment to football, and Diaz, 52, is a great fit there. But he also should have higher-profile opportunities, especially with a diverse background as an assistant.”
If Duke were to lose him, it would be a major hit. The program already saw quarterback Darian Mensah leave for ACC rival Miami through the transfer portal this offseason, a reminder of how tough it can be for the Blue Devils to hold onto talent.
And that’s the tension here: Diaz looks like the kind of coach who could attract attention from a more prestigious job, even if Duke would prefer to keep building with him. The question is whether the Blue Devils have the resources to give him what he needs to stay in the hunt for the ACC championship and the College Football Playoff.
