Duke may have to wait until the last possible moment to know whether Nate Sheppard is available for Saturday’s matchup with North Carolina.
The Blue Devils host the Tar Heels at 3:30 p.m., and Sheppard’s status has turned into a true game-day mystery. He appeared on the injury report Wednesday night as questionable, and Pete Nakos reported Friday night that it will come down to how Sheppard feels Saturday morning and through pregame warm-ups.
That uncertainty matters because Sheppard has been one of the most dangerous backs in college football this season. He has rushed for 743 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 6.3 yards per carry. He also gives Duke another weapon in the passing game, something North Carolina was reminded of last week when he caught a 43-yard pass to get Duke into field-goal range late.
Earlier this week, head coach Bill Belichick made it clear he views Sheppard as a major problem for opposing defenses. Belichick said Sheppard is one of the best running backs he’s seen, and added that he can hurt teams as a receiver too.
Duke enters the rivalry game trying to bounce back from its first loss of the season last week. The Blue Devils have won the last two meetings with North Carolina, including last season’s win, and they’ll be aiming to keep the Victory Bell and beat the Tar Heels for the third straight year and second time in the Bill Belichick era.
Both teams will release their final injury report two hours before kickoff.

Dukes Passing Game Could Decide Everything Against North Carolina
Duke heads into Saturdays matchup with North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium in a spot that should feel familiar by now: close ACC records, familiar opponent, and the kind of game where one matchup can tilt the whole afternoon. The Tar Heels come in with issues in the secondary, which gives the Blue Devils a possible opening if they want to lean on the air instead of trying to pound away on the ground.
Nate Sheppards status adds another layer to the puzzle. Dukes star player is questionable because of injury, and that uncertainty could force the Blue Devils to adjust their offensive approach on the fly. With so much on the line in a rivalry game that figures to be tight, how Duke chooses to attack North Carolina through the passing game may end up shaping everything. [Read more 🡒]
Duke Turns UNC Weekend Into A Big Recruiting Opportunity
Duke is turning an in-state showcase weekend into more than just a football date on the calendar. The Blue Devils will have several recruiting visitors on hand, including Brayden Bailey, a junior wide receiver from Holy Innocents Episcopal School who has already emerged as a top-tier 2028 prospect.
Bailey has a Duke offer in hand and has been making the rounds with other Power Four programs as well, including Wake Forest. He also brings a strong recent rsum, thanks to his sophomore production and an encouraging start to his junior season, which makes his trip to Durham one worth watching as the Blue Devils try to make an early impression. Duke Faces A Dangerous UNC Test At The Worst Time
A rivalry game already carries enough weight, but Duke gets North Carolina at a tricky moment with the Victory Bell on the line and questions hanging over the Blue Devils health. The matchup at home has the feel of one of those late-season games where every yard matters, and Duke Wires staff is leaning toward a tight, low-scoring night if the Blue Devils can handle the pressure.
Nate Sheppards status is part of the concern, since the running back is questionable and his availability could shape how Duke wants to attack the Tar Heels. The broader read around the game is familiar for a rivalry matchup between teams trying to sort through recent form and find an edge, which is why this one feels so tense even before kickoff.
