Duke Faces Major Shake-Up as Star Quarterback Makes Shocking Announcement

NCAA clearance paves the way for Walker Eget to step in as a pivotal quarterback option for Duke, reshaping their offensive strategy for 2026.

The offseason hasn't been kind to the Duke Blue Devils, especially after their run to the ACC Championship. Just as the Transfer Portal was closing, they were hit with the unexpected news of Darian Mensah's decision to transfer. After some legal back-and-forth, Mensah is now set to join Miami, leaving a significant gap in Duke's lineup.

Darian Mensah's last-minute departure threw a wrench into Duke's offseason strategy. With limited options, they turned their attention to San Jose State transfer Walker Eget.

Walker Eget Gains Eligibility: A Boost for Duke

The challenge for Duke wasn't just securing Walker Eget's commitment. They also needed NCAA approval for his eligibility in 2026. On Thursday, Duke celebrated a victory as Eget's waiver was approved, clearing his path to join the team.

Eget's arrival is timely, stepping into the role vacated by Mensah. While he's a strong contender for the starting quarterback position, Duke hasn't officially handed him the reins yet.

Eget's stats from his time at San Jose State show promise: he completed 232 of 393 passes (59.0%) for 3,051 yards, with 17 touchdowns against 9 interceptions, and added 96 rushing yards. Over his career, he's accumulated 5,563 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, with 19 interceptions and 181 rushing yards.

With the departures of Mensah and leading receiver Cooper Barkate to Miami, Duke's offense faces a significant rebuild. However, there's a silver lining.

Star running back Nate Sheppard is returning after an impressive freshman season, rushing for 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns. Eget will need to elevate his game, but with Sheppard's support, Duke's offense could still pack a punch in 2026.
