Duke heads into the 2026 season with the kind of résumé that demands attention and the kind of roster turnover that demands answers.
The Blue Devils are coming off back-to-back nine-win seasons and an ACC championship, but they’ll have to navigate the next step without several key pieces. Quarterback Darian Mensah is gone after transferring to Miami, and last season’s leading receiver, Cooper Barkate, also entered the portal and signed with the Hurricanes.
That puts Manny Diaz in a familiar spot for Year 3: trying to keep Duke moving forward while replacing important production. Diaz has already flipped the program’s trajectory, and his first two seasons have produced 18 wins. Now the question is how the 2026 schedule stacks up, and ESPN’s Football Power Index offers a clear snapshot of where the Blue Devils are expected to have their best and toughest chances.
The numbers, as of Monday, August 31, paint a mixed picture. Duke is projected to be favored in several games, but it also faces some steep odds against Miami, Virginia and Illinois.
The season starts with Tulane in Week 1, a rematch of last year’s loss in New Orleans. ESPN gives Duke a 61.9 percent chance to win that one.
Week 2 brings a trip to Illinois, where the Blue Devils will try to rebound from last season’s 45-19 loss in Durham. Their win probability there is 33.6 percent.
After that, Duke gets a more manageable stretch. Stanford comes to town in Week 3, with Duke at 72.5 percent to win, and William & Mary follows in Week 4, where the Blue Devils are listed at 96.5 percent.
The middle of the schedule gets trickier. Duke visits Georgia Tech in Week 6 with a 41.4 percent chance, then hosts UNC in Week 7 in a game that ESPN pegs at 48.2 percent. Bill Belichick’s second season with the Tar Heels opened with a 15-10 win over TCU in Dublin, Ireland.
Week 8 sends Duke to Virginia for a rematch of last year’s ACC title game, when the Blue Devils won in overtime. The Cavaliers, who opened this season by routing NC State 34-8, are given Duke just a 25.2 percent chance.
Duke should be in better shape in Week 9 against Boston College, where it is favored at 74.5 percent, and Week 10 at NC State, where the Blue Devils sit at 59.7 percent. The Wolfpack, meanwhile, looked rough in their opener, falling to UVA 34-8.
Then comes the game that stands out most on the calendar: a Week 11 trip to Miami. ESPN gives Duke only a 7.2 percent chance there, and the matchup comes with added intrigue because Mensah and Barkate will be on the other sideline, trying to help the Hurricanes push back toward the College Football Playoff.
The final stretch includes Clemson in Week 12, where Duke is at 27.5 percent. That one carries a fresh memory for the Blue Devils, who beat Clemson last season on a two-point conversion with 13 seconds left.
Duke closes the schedule at Wake Forest in Week 13, and ESPN gives the Blue Devils a 44.8 percent shot. The Demon Deacons quietly won nine games last season in Jake Dickert’s first year.
