Texas Tech has suddenly found itself in the middle of the Thomas Castellanos conversation, and that’s a development worth watching.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, the Red Raiders have become a team to monitor for the former Florida State quarterback. Castellanos was granted a temporary restraining order against the NCAA in Kentucky on Friday, opening the door for him to play a fifth season of college football. His path has already been a winding one: he started at UCF, spent two seasons at Boston College, and then played last year at Florida State.
Texas Tech appeared to have its quarterback situation settled after signing Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby, but that plan unraveled once reports surfaced that Sorsby bet at least $90,000 on sports bets while he was a college athlete. Sorsby is no longer with the Red Raiders, leaving Texas Tech set to start Will Hammond - unless the Castellanos possibility becomes real.
Nakos reported that Texas Tech and Castellanos have been in contact since the eligibility ruling, though the Red Raiders are still doing their homework to make sure there won’t be trouble in signing the four-year player.
That caution makes sense. Texas Tech does not need another issue hanging over it.
Still, Castellanos would bring a real boost to the table. Last season, he threw for 2,760 yards with 15 touchdown passes and nine interceptions, and he added 557 rushing yards and nine rushing scores.
The Red Raiders also have a roster in place that could support another College Football Playoff push. Right now, Hammond is the projected starter, but he is coming off a torn ACL.
If Texas Tech doesn’t end up pulling the trigger, the ACC may have a team that should get involved: Duke.
It’s not clear whether the Blue Devils have any interest, but they know Castellanos well. Duke was left scrambling when Darien Mensah bailed at the 11th hour to head to Miami, and the Blue Devils responded by bringing in San Jose State transfer Walker Eget. He may be able to hold things together this season, but the ACC looks open enough that more than one team could find its way into the playoff mix.
A Castellanos move to Duke could change the picture quickly. Manny Diaz is expected to have a strong defense in 2026, but the Blue Devils are still searching for the quarterback to match it.

Dukes 2026 training camp has already offered a pretty clear glimpse of what this team wants to be. The running back room looks deeper than it has in a while, with Nate Sheppard leading the way and Jayvian Tanelus and CJ Campbell both turning heads, while the defense has flashed the kind of disruptive play that shows up in sacks and tackles for loss and can shape an entire seasons identity.
Even with those pieces settling into place, the biggest question in camp is still unresolved.
