Duke's Dominance on the Boards Leads to Victory Over Top-Ranked Michigan
In a high-stakes showdown at Capital One Arena, Duke basketball showcased its prowess on the boards to edge out No. 1 Michigan. The Blue Devils, ranked No. 3, knew the key to victory was controlling the glass, especially after watching Michigan dominate Purdue with 13 offensive rebounds and 16 second-chance points.
Determined not to let history repeat itself, Duke out-rebounded Michigan 41-28, including a crucial 13 offensive boards. This effort was pivotal in their 68-63 victory, marking their ninth win against a ranked opponent this season.
Coach Jon Scheyer praised his team's competitive spirit, saying, "It was just a big-time game where our guys were ready to compete at a high level."
Michigan, which had been out-rebounding opponents by an average of 11 boards per game, faced a formidable Duke frontline. The Wolverines' towering center, Aday Mara, and forwards Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. had their hands full. Lendeborg led Michigan with 21 points but was limited to just five in the second half, partly due to foul trouble that also affected Mara.
Duke's own Cameron Boozer, who tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds, noted the physicality of the matchup. "They're a great front line," Boozer said. "They've got a lot of size, but we have a great front line too."
Freshman Nik Khamenia was instrumental, matching his season-high with nine rebounds. Michigan's coach Dusty May acknowledged Khamenia's tenacity, highlighting his energy and effort on the boards.
Khamenia emphasized the importance of hustle plays, especially against the top team in the nation. "Possessions matter," he stated.
"Little possessions, like getting on the floor. Those plays are huge in a game like this."
With this victory, Duke continues to build momentum as they head to South Bend for an ACC matchup against Notre Dame. If their performance against Michigan is any indication, the Blue Devils are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
