Deron Rippey Jr. Is Already Giving Duke Fans A Reason To Buzz

Freshman guard Deron Rippey Jr. is eager to shine under the spotlight at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium, where the fans' fervor could prove to be his biggest motivator.

When Duke takes the floor against Army at 6:30 p.m. ET Monday on ESPNU, Cameron Indoor Stadium will be hearing from the Crazies again for the first time in a regular-season home setting since the Blue Devils beat UNC 76-61 240 days ago. That kind of backdrop is exactly what freshman point guard Deron Rippey Jr. signed up for.

Rippey made that clear on the latest episode of Duke Blue Planet, where he talked about choosing Jon Scheyer’s program because of the energy around the fan base. “Playing in front of students who actually care about the basketball team was really big for me,” Rippey, a five-star prospect from Blair Academy in New Jersey, said. “I wouldn't want to go to a school that is quiet or where the fans aren't cheering because that's not how I want to play.”

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Brooklyn native has already looked comfortable feeding off that noise in Duke’s preseason home games. In exhibition wins over Belmont and Tennessee, Rippey came off the bench and averaged 16.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals. He gave the Blue Devils a steady spark in both blowout wins and quickly made himself a favorite with the crowd.

“Honestly, the first few [home exhibition] games have been extremely electric,” Rippey, who had three points, one rebound, one assist, and one block in 13 minutes during last Sunday’s 90-84 road exhibition win over Kansas, said during the episode. “Every time something happens, no matter what it is, the fans are always energetic.

“They're always in tune with the game, no matter the score or no matter if we're beating a team by a lot or a little. I feel like they're always in tune, and that's what makes this place so great.”

For now, Rippey does not appear headed for a starting role alongside the lone freshman in Duke’s exhibition starting lineup, forward/center Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje. Even so, his early performances and Scheyer’s comments suggest he’ll keep playing a major bench role.

“So far, 'Rip' has made strides in two main areas,” Scheyer, entering his fifth season and carrying a 70-7 record over the past two years, said. “One is defense, just the ability to pressure the ball and his off-ball defense with just being more alert and aware than you have to be in high school.

“And the second thing is just his decision-making, just because he's always been a guy that can create any time he wants. So, for him, I love the fact he's been ready to shoot, the way he's showed that he's able to make others better with quick passing and quick decisions or getting into the paint and driving and drawing two [defenders]...”

After Army, Duke stays in Durham and gets another home date with Coastal Carolina at 8 p.m. ET Thursday on ACC Network.

Duke Football Just Gave Fans One More Reason To Worry About Manny Diaz

Dukes football season has already delivered one of its most lopsided wins in years, with a 47-2 rout of Boston College that locked up bowl eligibility and featured Nate Sheppard setting a school record with five rushing touchdowns. It was the kind of afternoon that gave the Blue Devils a clear on-field lift, even as the program suddenly found itself pulled into a much bigger conversation off the field.

Florida States decision to fire Mike Norvell has immediately put Manny Diaz in the mix for the opening, and that is the sort of attention Duke would rather not be fielding in November. With the football team trying to build on its momentum and Duke basketball set to open its season against Army under Jon Scheyer, the last thing Blue Devils fans want is uncertainty around the coach who has helped steady the program. Manny Diaz Saw One Crucial Sign In Dukes Bounce-Back Win

After two straight losses, Duke got the kind of response Manny Diaz was looking for in a 47-2 home win over Boston College. The Blue Devils looked sharper on both sides of the ball, but it was the defense that set the tone by shutting down the Eagles on the ground and helping turn the game into a runaway. Nate Sheppards five touchdowns only added to a day that felt like a reset for a team trying to steady itself.

Diaz pointed to the improvement as a sign the group is moving in the right direction, while also making it clear the win should not be mistaken for a finish line. For Duke, the challenge now is carrying that edge forward instead of letting a dominant afternoon become a one-off. The next stretch will show whether this was the start of a true bounce back or just a needed break from the skid. [Read more 🡒]

Jay Bilas Just Reminded Duke Fans What The Brotherhood Still Means

Jay Bilas spent time with the 2026-27 Duke basketball team at Jon Scheyers request, another reminder that the program still leans on voices that know what it means to wear the uniform. A former Blue Devils player and assistant coach, Bilas has long been part of the schools basketball fabric, and his presence around the team fits neatly with the way Duke continues to blend its past with the present as a new season gets rolling.

Bilas will also be on the call as a color commentator for Dukes season opener against Army, giving fans a familiar voice as the Blue Devils begin an early schedule that will quickly start to reveal what this group is made of. For a program that treats its history as part of its identity, the timing of Bilass return is a small but fitting nod to the standard Duke still expects to carry forward. [Read more 🡒]
