Tarik Skubal has become a headline act this offseason, capturing attention during the World Baseball Classic with Team USA. Initially set for just one start, Skubal found himself rethinking his plans after taking the mound.
“I didn't expect these types of emotions to run through my brain or my thoughts to differ," Skubal shared with reporters. "I was pretty committed to making a start and getting back to camp.
Things have changed, obviously. That's why I'm going to have some conversations and try to figure out a plan for me.”
As the offseason kicked off, Skubal and the Detroit Tigers were deep in negotiations for an extension, but the gap between them was staggering-an eye-popping $250 million.
This massive disparity could lead Skubal to consider a change of scenery. If that happens, the Toronto Blue Jays might be keen to make a move.
The Tigers struggled at the end of 2025, especially offensively, and even with talents like Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander, their challenges remain. A lackluster offense and untimely pitching injuries could push the Tigers out of contention, potentially putting Skubal on the trade block.
Despite his hefty price tag-around $10 million at the trade deadline-the competition for Skubal would be intense. He’s the kind of player who can single-handedly alter the course of a division race or a playoff series.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays have been busy bolstering their bullpen, starting with Dylan Cease and recently adding Max Scherzer to the mix. With an already formidable roster poised for another World Series push, Skubal could be the final piece that tips the scales in their favor in the AL. While acquiring him would come at a steep cost, it might be just what Toronto needs to clinch the top spot.
