Verlander Drops Eye Opening McGonigle Comparison

Could Kevin McGonigle be the Tigers' next Alex Bregman? Verlander's high praise suggests a promising future.

Kevin McGonigle made quite the entrance, capturing the attention of fans and even a future Hall of Famer. In his Major League Baseball debut, McGonigle became only the second Detroit Tigers player and the 21st major leaguer since 1900 to notch four hits, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. This performance has certainly fueled excitement around the Tigers' top prospect, who is also ranked as the No. 2 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.

Justin Verlander, a seasoned veteran who's faced off against some of the game's greats, couldn't help but draw a comparison for McGonigle. "He reminds me a bit of (Alex) Bregman," Verlander shared with Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. "Really into the game, like watches and sees a lot -- sees everything."

For Tigers fans, the idea of McGonigle emulating Bregman's career is tantalizing. Bregman, the Chicago Cubs third baseman, boasts accolades like three All-Star selections, a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and two World Series titles. Verlander, having shared the field with Bregman during his time with the Houston Astros from 2017-24, knows the caliber of player and leader Bregman is.

"I don't like comparing people," Verlander noted, according to Petzold. "It just seems like he rises to the occasion.

He expects to be in the moment. As a rookie, that's hard.

It's difficult to have that level of confidence, but it really can serve you well."

Verlander emphasized that McGonigle's confidence is more of a focused determination rather than arrogance. This blend of attitude and skill is precisely what the Tigers could use, especially with Verlander, the league's elder statesman, guiding the new wave of talent. There's a touch of irony too, considering Detroit's past efforts to bring Bregman into their fold.

While it's still early days, McGonigle's trajectory suggests the Tigers might have a standout player on their hands. If he continues on this path, the future looks bright for both him and the team.
