Mud Hens Soar Over Mets with a 5-1 Win
The Toledo Mud Hens kicked off their series against the Syracuse Mets with a decisive 5-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon. The game, shortened to seven innings due to rain, saw the Hens capitalize early and hold their ground.
Veteran pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. took the mound for the Mets, but the Mud Hens wasted no time taking advantage. Wenceel Pérez started things off with a walk, followed by a miscue from Mets' second baseman Ji Hwan Bae on a grounder by Max Clark.
With the bases loaded after Jace Jung's walk, Trei Cruz delivered a crucial hit, threading a ground ball through to the outfield and driving in two runs. Max Anderson followed with a soft grounder that added another run, thanks to a fielding error.
Corey Julks then hit into what could have been a double play, but Bae's wide throw allowed another run to score. Gage Workman capped off the inning with a double, bringing Julks home and putting the Hens up 5-0.
Ricky Vanasco took over pitching duties for the Hens and, despite allowing a leadoff single to MJ Melendez, retired the next three batters efficiently. He ended the inning with a strikeout, setting the tone for the Hens' defense.
The Mud Hens' offense cooled in the second inning as Pérez singled but was caught stealing. Vanasco continued to shine, striking out Cristian Pache with a deceptive changeup.
In the third, Trei Cruz reached on a walk but was erased by a double play. Drew Sommers came in to pitch and, despite a leadoff walk, struck out two to keep the Mets at bay.
Ronny Mauricio put the Mets on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, but Burch Smith relieved Sommers and closed the inning without further damage.
Edwards Jr. settled in after the rocky first inning, delivering three scoreless frames before turning it over to Jordan Geber in the fifth. Geber managed to pick off Max Clark after a single and struck out Jung to maintain the scoreline.
Smith continued his solid outing in the bottom of the fifth with a clean 1-2-3 inning. As rain began to fall, the game faced a half-hour delay. Once play resumed, Konnor Pilkington took the mound for the Hens, allowing a bunt single but quickly recovering with two strikeouts to end the sixth.
In the seventh, Geber faced some trouble, walking Gage Workman and Pérez, but Alex Carrillo came in to shut the door. Despite a walk to Max Clark, Carrillo ended the inning with a challenge call on Jung, solidifying the Hens' victory.
