Tigers' Troy Melton Faces Setback, 2026 Opening Day in Jeopardy

Tigers' rising star Troy Melton faces a setback with elbow inflammation, jeopardizing his readiness for the 2026 Opening Day.

LAKELAND, FL - The Detroit Tigers are facing a setback with right-hander Troy Melton, who won't be on the 2026 Opening Day roster. The reason? An untimely injury.

Melton, just 25, is dealing with right elbow inflammation that has sidelined him from throwing for one to two weeks. This timing makes it unlikely he'll be ready to face the San Diego Padres on March 26.

Manager A.J. Hinch shared on Friday, Feb. 27, before a spring training matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies, "It's unlikely that he's going to be ready for the beginning of the season, but we'll know more as we ramp him back up what that exactly means."

The young pitcher sought medical advice for general arm soreness and was diagnosed with inflammation. The doctor recommended a brief hiatus from throwing, though Melton can still engage in other activities like lifting, running, and pitcher fielding practice. "We'll limit the throw while things calm down," Hinch explained.

Melton's recent activity included a bullpen session on Feb. 12, live batting practice on Feb. 15, another bullpen on Feb. 17, and a second live batting practice on Feb. 20.

However, he hasn't pitched since then. Hinch emphasized, "Time of year, certainly going to be super cautious with his throwing program."

Last season, Melton impressed with a 2.76 ERA, 15 walks, and 36 strikeouts over 45⅔ innings in 16 games, including four starts. He also posted a 3.23 ERA over 39 innings in 10 starts for Double-A Erie and a 2.72 ERA over 36⅓ innings in eight games (six starts) for Triple-A Toledo. His MLB debut came in July 2025, showcasing his potential on the big stage.

The Tigers will be watching closely as Melton recovers, hoping to see him back in action soon.
