With Aug. 3 closing in, Detroit sits in the middle of a decision that could shape not just its own season, but the market around the league. A strong June and start to July have pushed the Tigers into a spot where the front office has to choose: chase a postseason run or cash in on valuable pieces.
League executives still don’t have a clear read on which way Detroit is leaning, but that picture should sharpen in the next few days. For now, the Tigers look like the club everyone else is watching.
Tarik Skubal sits at the center of it all. He’s one of the best players in baseball, and if Detroit makes him available, he instantly becomes the most sought-after name on the market. A move like that would ripple across several playoff races.
And Skubal wouldn’t be the only arm drawing attention if the Tigers decide to sell. Casey Mize, Kenley Jansen, and Jack Flaherty could also be in play.

Per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Los Angeles Dodgers have shown increased interest in Skubal because of questions surrounding Shohei Ohtani’s ability to pitch.
