Tigers Sign Framber Valdez, Igniting Excitement for 2026 Season

Tigers manager AJ Hinch solidifies the pitching lineup for 2026 by confirming Framber Valdez as a key starter, setting the stage for a promising season.

Detroit Tigers fans have had quite the rollercoaster offseason, with Tarik Skubal at the center of many heated discussions. But the signing of Framber Valdez has shifted the narrative from future worries to present excitement.

Valdez, a 2022 World Series champion, is set to create a formidable one-two punch with Skubal at the top of the rotation. That's the vision, at least.

Manager AJ Hinch confirmed that Valdez will slot in as the No. 2 starter, right behind the two-time reigning American League Cy Young winner. While it seemed like the obvious choice, Hinch did toy with the idea of separating the left-handers in the rotation.

The rotation will likely be rounded out by the returning Justin Verlander, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize. Each brings their own level of optimism for 2026, but Valdez stands out as a workhorse, consistently delivering in the AL. His spot behind Skubal is well-deserved.

Even during a challenging season, Valdez was a key player for the Houston Astros in 2025. He recorded a 3.66 ERA, struck out 187 batters, and pitched two complete games over 192 innings, holding opponents to a .667 OPS. While his performance dipped in August and September, contributing to the team's tough finish, the main question surrounding him might be his attitude.

Last September, Valdez caught attention when he crossed up catcher Cesar Salazar, raising some concerns about his presence in the clubhouse. Despite this, the Tigers didn't let that incident affect their decision in free agency. They’re banking on the impressive track record he’s built over the past eight seasons.

Valdez will make his official debut with the Tigers on March 27 in a road game against the San Diego Padres. If everything goes as planned, Detroit will boast two legitimate aces in what promises to be a pivotal MLB season.
