They’ve been playing better lately, but the case for buying and the case for selling both still have real weight. If Detroit leans toward selling, one low-profile player could quietly become part of the conversation.
That name is Ben Malgeri.
He’s not the kind of prospect Tigers fans usually circle first, and he doesn’t carry the buzz of a top organizational piece. Still, the 26-year-old has put together a useful season. He started the year in Triple-A and hit .296/.401/.496 with nine home runs and 34 runs batted in, production that was strong enough to earn him a shot in the majors.
Through Thursday night’s game, Malgeri was hitting .286/.381/.343 in 35 at-bats for Detroit.
An outfielder by trade, Malgeri arrived at a time when the Tigers have dealt with plenty of trouble in the outfield, so his promotion never felt far off. He looks like a capable player, but not one Detroit would be likely to treat as untouchable in trade talks.
That’s part of what makes him interesting. He isn’t in the team’s top-30 prospects, and as an 18th-round pick in 2021, he was never viewed as a major prize. He fits the mold of a player who had to grind for everything, working his way through the minors and earning his place on the big league roster.
Malgeri may not headline any deal, but he could still matter. If the Tigers are trying to close a trade and a rival club wants a little extra to bridge the gap, he might be the kind of add-on that gets it done.
That could come into play if Detroit deals one of its starters other than Tarik Skubal, such as Casey Mize or Jack Flaherty, and needs to sweeten the return.
