The Toledo Mud Hens’ game at Louisville was suspended in the second inning, and the clubs will finish it on Wednesday before the regularly scheduled game.
At Double-A, the Erie SeaWolves leaned on a bullpen game and made the most of their chances in a 5-2 win over the Hartford Yard Goats.
Colin Fields and Yosber Sanchez opened the game with two innings apiece, and each gave up a run as Erie trailed 2-0 after four. The offense finally broke through in the sixth when Peyton Graham was hit by a pitch with one out to start the rally. Woody Hadeen then delivered his first Double-A hit, an automatic double that appeared to leave the park and bounce back in, though the call stood and Graham was held at third.
A Zyhir Hope groundout brought Graham in, and Thayron Liranzo worked a walk to reach base for the third time. Andrew Jenkins followed with a two-run double to put Erie ahead 3-2.
The SeaWolves added on in the seventh. Roberto Campos singled with one out, Seth Stephenson walked, and Graham reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Campos. Stephenson then came home on a Hadeen groundout to make it 5-2.
Hayden Minton covered the sixth and seventh without trouble, and Zane Barnhart and Tanner Kohlhepp each finished with a scoreless inning.
Jenkins finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double, two strikeouts and a stolen base. Campos went 2-for-4 with a run and a strikeout, and Liranzo was 1-for-2 with a run, two walks, a strikeout and a caught stealing.
West Michigan got a strong outing from Rayner Castillo, but the Whitecaps still fell 5-2 to the Lansing Lugnuts.
Castillo’s second season with West Michigan has been a bumpy one, with the easy mid-90s sinker he showed in Lakeland not showing up consistently and his secondary pitches taking time to develop. Lately, though, things have started to turn, and he was sharp in this one. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed just one run over six innings.
That lone run came in the sixth. Samuel Gil answered with a solo homer in the bottom half to tie it, but lefty Ethan Sloan ran into trouble in the seventh and gave up four runs.
Beau Ankeney, Clayton Campbell and Jackson Strong each singled in the bottom half to drive in a run, but West Michigan couldn’t build on it and didn’t threaten much the rest of the way.
Ankeney went 2-for-4 with a run and two strikeouts. Gil finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Strong was 1-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and a caught stealing. Castillo’s line: 6.0 innings, one earned run, six hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
The Whitecaps are back at it Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. ET at LMCU Park.
Lakeland struck out 11 times and left chances on the table in a 6-3 loss to Bradenton.
Caleb Leys started and allowed two runs over 3.2 innings while striking out two. Jorge Guzman finished the fourth, and then Grayson Grinsell and Xiomer Guacache each allowed two runs as the bullpen struggled to hold the line.
Jordan Yost put Lakeland on the board in the third with a solo home run to right field. Yost was one of the few Tigers who swung it well. John Peck began his rehab assignment in the game, followed Yost’s homer with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, while fellow rehabbing player Chris Meyers struck out looking to end the inning.
Maddox Molony, Detroit’s sixth-round pick in July, made his debut at third base and picked up his first professional hit with a soft single to third in the fourth.
Yost tripled with one out in the eighth, Hunter Dobbins pinch-hit for Peck and drew a walk, and Meyers doubled in Yost to bring in another run. That pushed Dobbins to third, and he scored on a wild pitch, but that was the extent of the comeback.
Meyers finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, a double and a strikeout.

Against that backdrop, Brant Hurters progress matters more than it might have in a healthier relief mix. The left-hander has been on the 60-day injured list with lumbar spine inflammation, but he has started rehab work with the Toledo Mud Hens and is getting closer to a return.
Hurters latest step came in a scoreless inning for Toledo, a clean outing that kept the door open for a quick move back to Detroit. MLB.coms injury report says he could be activated soon, with the White Sox series mentioned as a possible landing spot, and there are also upcoming games against the Pirates and Royals on the calendar.
