A familiar arm is heading back to Comerica Park, just wearing a different uniform this time.
Tarik Skubal will start for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Detroit Tigers in Friday’s series opener, manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner is making his return to Detroit less than a month after the Tigers shipped him to Los Angeles in a deadline blockbuster.
Skubal’s final outing in a Tigers jersey came at Comerica Park on July 29, when he worked 6 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles and was greeted with a standing ovation on the way out. Four days later, Detroit dealt him to the Dodgers for prospects Zyhir Hope, Brady Smith, and River Ryan.
The left-hander’s run in Detroit was a major one. He delivered Cy Young-caliber seasons, captured a Triple Crown in 2024, and helped the Tigers reach the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time in 10 years. But the sides couldn’t land an extension in spring training after agreeing to a one-year deal through arbitration.
"I hope (the Tigers) do the festivities (for Skubal) the night after we win on Friday, so the emotion doesn't get to him and he can just kind of enjoy the welcome back," Roberts said, per Maddie Lee of the Los Angeles Times.
Since landing in Los Angeles, Skubal has only deepened an already loaded Dodgers rotation as they chase a third straight World Series title. He’s also kept the door open on a possible return to Detroit, saying earlier this month that he’d "love to return" as a free agent this winter.
He’s been excellent again this season. Across 20 total starts with the Tigers and Dodgers, Skubal owns a 2.91 ERA, a 2.60 FIP, and a 0.95 WHIP, with 146 strikeouts. In four starts for L.A., he has punched out 30 batters, walked just seven, and posted a 3.38 ERA, including an 11-strikeout performance in his latest outing against Pittsburgh.
Detroit, meanwhile, has cooled off after a brief surge following the trade. The Tigers entered Wednesday having dropped nine of their last 11 and sitting five games back of Cleveland for the final AL wild-card spot.
And Skubal may not be the only headline arm the Tigers see this weekend. Roberts said Shohei Ohtani could start Sunday’s series finale if Friday’s bullpen session goes well, according to Jack Harris of the California Post. If that happens, it would be the four-time MVP’s first time on the mound since July 3.
