In the world of baseball, the excitement is building as Team USA gears up for the World Baseball Classic with an impressive lineup of pitchers. Among them is Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, although fans should note that his participation will be brief.
Skubal announced that he'll make just one start during the WBC pool play before returning to focus on his routine with the Tigers. His decision to limit his involvement stems from a desire to maintain his momentum and readiness for the upcoming MLB season. "I’m making one start," Skubal shared, emphasizing his commitment to both Team USA and his responsibilities back in Lakeland.
The connection to Team USA came about through a conversation with Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes during MLBPA meetings in December. This year, Team USA, under manager Mark DeRosa, boasts a pitching staff featuring reigning Cy Young Award winners, a testament to the growing allure of the tournament for top American players.
Pitchers often face a dilemma with the WBC, as the games can disrupt their spring training routines. Skubal, however, is clear about his approach.
"I’m not ramping up earlier than I need to," he stated, dismissing any notion of altering his preparation for the season. His focus remains on being ready for Opening Day with the Tigers.
As Skubal enters his final year of team control, his future looms large. At 29, he’s on the brink of free agency, which could see him become one of the league's highest-paid pitchers. Yet, his eyes are set on helping the Tigers in their quest for a World Series title.
Balancing his national pride with professional commitments, Skubal is keen to make the most of both opportunities. Team USA kicks off its WBC journey on March 6 against Brazil, and while Skubal will be part of the action, his heart remains with the Tigers. "I think it’s kind of the best of both worlds," he reflected, expressing gratitude for the chance to represent his country while staying true to his team goals.
