Max Clark Stuns Tigers Camp With Early Performance

Josue Briceo, the Tigers' underrated prospect, is making a name for himself in camp with impressive performances despite not being an Opening Day contender.

In the Tigers' spring training camp, all eyes are on two standout prospects: Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark. Ranked as the No. 2 and No. 10 prospects in baseball, respectively, they're generating significant buzz.

While Clark isn't expected to make the Opening Day roster, the possibility remains open for McGonigle, especially given the Tigers' management's reluctance to rule it out. McGonigle is set to start at shortstop in the Tigers' first spring game against the Yankees.

However, it's not just the top two prospects making waves. Josue Briceño, the Tigers' No. 3 prospect and baseball's No. 40, is turning heads in major league camp.

During a live batting practice session, Briceño launched a massive home run off Tarik Skubal, drawing gasps from spectators. Skubal, known for his tough pitching, acknowledged the quality of Briceño's swing, noting the impressive exit velocity and the competitive nature of his at-bats.

This feat is noteworthy as Skubal rarely gives up home runs to left-handed batters. Only a select few, including Corey Seager and Freddie Freeman, have managed it since Skubal's 2020 debut.

Despite Briceño's impressive showing, his chances of making the Opening Day roster are slim, especially with the Tigers' current depth at catcher and first base. Dillon Dingler and Jake Rogers provide a solid catching duo, while Spencer Torkelson is expected to secure first base.

Last season, Briceño faced challenges after being promoted to Double-A, posting a .232 average and a .716 OPS in 45 games. In comparison, Clark and McGonigle had stronger performances. The Tigers see no need to rush Briceño's development, preferring to allow him to grow at his own pace.

Nonetheless, Briceño is making the most of his spring training opportunity, showcasing his potential and making a strong impression with his power at the plate. His ability to take on one of the league's top left-handed pitchers is a testament to his talent and determination.
