Tigers Fans, Get Ready: Kevin McGonigle Set to Shine in Spring Training

LAKELAND, FL - Detroit Tigers enthusiasts, the wait is over. Kevin McGonigle, the 21-year-old sensation, is gearing up to start at shortstop this Saturday, Feb. 21, as the Tigers face off against the New York Yankees at George M.

Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The first pitch is set for 1:05 p.m., and it's sure to be an exciting start to spring training.

Joining the action, Gleyber Torres will be holding down second base for the Yankees.

Manager A.J. Hinch emphasized the importance of experience for young players like McGonigle.

"It's about getting on the field, playing alongside the team, and really settling into the game," Hinch noted. This opportunity is key for McGonigle as he aims to cement his place in the lineup.

Regarded as the No. 2 prospect in baseball, McGonigle's journey to this moment has been impressive. While this isn't his first taste of spring training, it's his debut in the MLB camp with a shot at making the 2026 Opening Day roster. Last year, he made a mark in eight spring games, stepping up from the minor leagues.

In those appearances, McGonigle showcased his talent by hitting .400, with a memorable home run and a solid defensive performance across multiple positions. His standout moment came against Aaron Nola, when he launched a 406-foot solo homer with a blistering 111.3 mph exit velocity, giving the Tigers an early lead.

Drafted 37th overall in 2023, McGonigle has shown promise at every level. Despite the Tigers' tradition of seasoning prospects at Triple-A Toledo, McGonigle's journey has been unique.

He hasn't played above Double-A Erie, yet his numbers are hard to ignore. In 2025, he posted a .254 average with 12 homers and a remarkable .991 OPS in Double-A.

His versatility was further highlighted in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .362 with five home runs and expanded his defensive repertoire.

Health remains a crucial factor for McGonigle. Over the past two seasons, he's battled a few injuries, including a hamstring strain and a right ankle sprain. Staying fit is essential for his path to the majors.

As the Tigers prepare for Opening Day on March 26 against the San Diego Padres, the door remains open for McGonigle to make his MLB debut. While nothing is set in stone, the potential is there, and fans should be excited about what's to come.
