Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle is already making waves, and it’s only the start of the season. During Friday’s game at Petco Park, McGonigle had an encounter that every rookie dreams of - and dreads.
San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill snatched what would have been McGonigle’s first career home run, leaping above the wall to make the grab. But Merrill didn’t stop there.
After doubling in the third inning, he playfully reminded McGonigle of his performance by holding up four fingers, highlighting his own 4-for-5 debut effort from the day before.
But McGonigle wasn’t about to let that moment define his day. With the Tigers trailing 2-1 in the eighth inning, bases loaded, and two outs, McGonigle faced off against lefty Wandy Peralta.
In a clutch moment, he worked the count full and delivered a sharp single to right-center, bringing home Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres. Dillon Dingler then followed with another RBI single, capping off a four-run inning that saw the Padres’ bullpen throw over 40 pitches.
The Tigers’ offseason focus on more competitive at-bats shone through in their 5-2 victory, marking their second consecutive win to kick off the season. McGonigle, MLB’s No. 2-ranked preseason prospect, is proving to be a catalyst for Detroit’s lineup, racking up five hits in his first eight at-bats. It’s early days, but McGonigle is showing he’s ready to make his mark in the big leagues.
