Justin Verlander Gets Emotional Tigers Return Update

Returning to the Tigers for his 20th MLB season, Justin Verlander combines experience and adaptability as he readies for his first start, reflecting on his journey and the excitement of coming home.

SAN DIEGO -- Justin Verlander is proving that age is just a number. At 43, the former Cy Young winner and MVP is back with the Tigers, bringing a blend of experience and evolution to the mound. Verlander’s embracing his new chapter, both as a player and a person.

In the Tigers' clubhouse, Verlander’s coffee habit is a running joke. While Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize have become the resident coffee aficionados, Verlander’s caffeine consumption is unmatched.

“Yeah, I drink more coffee now,” Verlander admits with a laugh. “But I’ve cut back during games so I can get my sleep. Gotta stay rested at my age.”

As the oldest player in the American League, Verlander takes it all in stride. “Is it just the AL?

Or all of baseball?” he jokes, acknowledging his veteran status with pride.

Manager A.J. Hinch captures the sentiment perfectly: “He’s a living legend. Seeing him back in our uniform means a lot to him and our fans.”

Verlander’s gearing up for his 20th Major League season, savoring every moment in a way he didn’t before. “I want to enjoy it,” he reflects. “I’m not saying this is it, but there’s not much time left, so I’m making the most of it.”

As he prepares for his Tigers return against the Diamondbacks, some things remain unchanged. He’ll walk into the clubhouse, headphones on, music blaring, ready to focus.

“I’ll have my headphones on for sure,” he says. “Just won’t be as angry.”

He’s excited to don the Olde English D again and aims to build on the Tigers’ strong start. Last year, Verlander delivered standout performances against Arizona while with the Giants, including a stellar seven scoreless innings at Chase Field. Despite a dip in velocity, his command was impeccable, a potential game plan for Monday.

His fastball velocity wasn’t quite there in Spring Training, but he’s not worried. “It’s not perfect, but hopefully good enough to get some outs,” he explains. “April comes along, and things start clicking.”

If Verlander can replicate his past success, he’ll head into his return to Comerica Park with momentum, setting the stage for a thrilling matchup against the Cardinals. But for now, his focus is on contributing to the rotation and relishing every moment of his second stint with the Tigers.
