Jackson Jobe’s best outing of the season arrived just when the Tigers needed it most.
With Detroit chasing a sweep of the Rockies on Sunday - its first since late July and early August against the Athletics - the right-hander delivered the kind of performance that has been easy to imagine and hard to find this year. Jobe had been working back from a long layoff after Tommy John surgery, and his first six starts were uneven.
His sharpest showing before Sunday came on Aug. 8, when he held the Giants to one hit over five innings, walking one and striking out four. Even that outing still felt short of the expectations that come with being the third overall draft pick.
Then Sunday started with a jolt. Jobe allowed a homer to the second batter he faced, enough to make it seem like another rough afternoon might be on the way.
Instead, he locked in from there and gave up only three more baserunners over 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and piled up eight strikeouts, a career high.

Detroit backed him with plenty of offense, scoring eight runs against Rockies starter Gabriel Hughes and the Colorado bullpen. Riley Greene hit his 20th home run of the season, and Spencer Torkelson added his 23rd.
For Tigers fans, the familiar refrain of “there’s always next year” has worn thin, especially with 2026 carrying so much hope. But this group has still given plenty of reasons to look ahead to 2027.
Jobe’s growth is the latest piece of that picture. Framber Valdez has looked much better over his last few starts, Troy Melton could enter Cy Young territory next season, and Keider Montero has become one of Detroit’s best slow-burn success stories. Jobe, meanwhile, may have offered a glimpse of what he can look like once he’s even farther removed from Tommy John.
The Tigers are also turning more and more to youth on the position-player side. They had seven rookie position players on the active roster Sunday, and six of them were in the game. The Rockies caveat is real - this series came against Colorado, after all - but Detroit’s offense did look sharper, more energetic, and more dangerous on the bases.
The bigger takeaway is simple: the Tigers have a real foundation here. It came together too late to satisfy this season’s expectations, but the outlook for 2027 is getting brighter.
