CLEARWATER, FL - The anticipation is building around Detroit Tigers' top prospect Kevin McGonigle as the team edges closer to making a pivotal roster decision. As of now, the Tigers are keeping their cards close to the chest regarding McGonigle's immediate future.
With Opening Day on the horizon, set for March 26 against the San Diego Padres, Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris and manager A.J. Hinch are taking their time. "We'll take that all the way down to the wire," Hinch mentioned, indicating that decisions might not surface until the last possible moment.
The Tigers plan to bring their remaining MLB spring training roster, including McGonigle and fellow prospects Trei Cruz, Max Anderson, and John Peck, to Scottsdale, Arizona. There, they'll face the Colorado Rockies in a couple of exhibition games, providing one last chance for players to make their case.
The biggest question mark remains McGonigle, a 21-year-old shortstop who has yet to play above Double-A Erie but is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in baseball. Initially, he seemed a shoo-in for the Opening Day roster, but now it feels like anyone's guess.
Hinch praised McGonigle for his composure and growth during spring training. "His ability to stay grounded and continue learning has been very, very impressive," Hinch said. "He's fit right in and learned a lot in the six weeks here."
This spring, McGonigle has been solid, hitting .324 with three home runs, 13 walks, and eight strikeouts over 18 games. His versatility at shortstop and third base adds to his appeal.
Reflecting on his 2025 performance, McGonigle finished strong at Double-A, hitting .254 with 12 homers, and dazzled at High-A West Michigan with a .372 average. Drafted 37th overall in 2023, his rise has been swift and notable.
Hinch highlighted McGonigle's instincts and competitive nature. "He's got a great feel for the game," he said, noting that, like any young player, there are still nuances to master. Yet, his competitive edge and game awareness stand out.
Despite a recent slump, hitting just .136 in his past 11 Grapefruit League games, McGonigle has shown patience at the plate with 11 walks. His power is evident, with home runs off notable pitchers, although only one of them, Braxton Ashcraft, is expected to make an Opening Day roster.
As the decision looms, McGonigle might find himself starting the season at Triple-A Toledo. Yet, his ability to handle the pressure and attention this spring has left a strong impression on the Tigers.
"It's really just his overall ability to manage the magnitude of this spring," Hinch reflected, acknowledging the challenges McGonigle has faced and overcome. The final decision may be pending, but McGonigle has certainly made his mark.
