Tarik Skubal has been making waves this offseason, and his impact was felt even during the World Baseball Classic with Team USA. Originally set for just one start, Skubal found himself in a whirlwind of emotions that left him reconsidering his next steps.
“I didn't expect these types of emotions to run through my brain or my thoughts to differ," Skubal shared with reporters. "I was pretty committed to making a start and getting back to camp.
Things have changed, obviously. That's why I'm going to have some conversations and try to figure out a plan for me.”
The offseason kicked off with the Detroit Tigers and Skubal trying to hammer out an extension. However, the negotiations hit a roadblock with a staggering difference in expectations-a gap that could be as wide as $250 million. That’s a quarter of a billion dollars, folks, a number that’s hard to wrap your head around.
Given the circumstances, Skubal might eventually seek a change of scenery. Enter the Toronto Blue Jays, a team that could greatly benefit from Skubal’s prowess.
The Tigers’ struggles at the end of 2025, particularly on offense, might force their hand. Injuries and a lackluster offense could push them out of contention, making Skubal a prime trade candidate.
Even as a high-priced rental, the demand for Skubal would be intense. He’s the kind of player who can single-handedly shift the balance of a division race or a postseason series.
The Blue Jays, on the other hand, have been busy bolstering their bullpen, starting with Dylan Cease and recently reuniting with Max Scherzer. They’re already a formidable squad with World Series aspirations, but adding Skubal could cement their status as AL favorites. While acquiring Skubal would come at a hefty price, it’s precisely the move that could push Toronto over the top.
